    alternator question...

    Where can I find out how many amps my alternator is putting out? Ive got a 99 Grand Marquis...

    u could take it to an alt shop...they will usually test it for free.....or u could buy an altimeter(i think thats what its called)

    radioshack....i found one that will tell if your alt or batt. is good.....but i havnt found anything on their site tha will tell the amount of ampers its putting out...u might go there and check it out tho....

    go to www.rockauto.com i think all they're alternators are just stock replacements...in that case, yours would be putting out 130amps, that is if its in good shape

    mine puts out 90 amps.....generally your actual alt has the amount that it puts out on it.....thats where i found my info out at

    i dont think those numbers are accurate

    i dont really think the numbers on the alternator are the amounts of current they should be putting out continuously, a car manufacturer's alternator has to supply the ignition system, the headlights, dash lights, brake lights, blower motor, wipers , rear defroster etc, those things can eat up 20+ amps, and just like with power ratings they over state what it can handle. to play it safe i wouldnt go beyond half of its stated current handling capacity .
    if your alt says it can put out 83 amps, i would assume 40 , subtract 20, w hich leaves 20 amps, which can handle up to 240 watts rms.
