    Icon31 Speaker & Wiring questions

All right, I'm not getting any cooperation from Pyle as to the specs of my 12's (WL1270/4), (they are admittedly old) so I thought some of you might be able to help. Here is what I know: 145w RMS / 290w Peak; Sens 95dB; 4 ohm; Voice Coil 2.5"; 70 oz magnet - 11lb. motor weight and 35-3500Hz range.

When I first talked to them several years ago I believe they said they were designed for a sealed enclosure; 1.74cu each. Thing is the box a local shop built for them to go in the back of my old '84 Z28 wasn't that big. I want to build a box for my existing car, which has plenty of room for whatever size box, but I'd feel better if I had the specs themselves.

In the mean time I have a few more ?'s. If one sub has 145w RMS capacity, does that mean that if I run two in parallel that I can push 300w RMS to them? This will put the load at 2 ohms (being in parallel), will that change any of the subs power handling specs?

I notice today’s subs don't seem to need as big of enclosures, my subs are about 10 years old, what new technologies in today’s subs would I HEAR a noticeable difference from?

I plan to mount the 2 12's in the trunk firing through the rear seats (mainly a hole where the arm rest folds up), are there better placements for a sealed enclosure, or is that a matter of trial and error? Also will they mess with my free space mounted 6x9's?

The 6.5's up front give me decent midbass, but I miss my subs... any help you could provide is appreciated. I want to have this system completely thought out, researched and planned out before I even begin. I don't want to find out half way into it that I forgot to consider something.

    Thanks again. God bless.

I'll take a whack at it.. If you connect your subs MONO @ 2 ohms the amp will see the subs as 1 load (or 1 sub). But the RMS rating will not change. So if your subs are 145 RMS and your amp delivers 300 @ 2ohms X 1. then each sub will see about 300 watts.

As for box placement, I would turn the box around to fire toward the back of the truck. You'll just have to play with it to find it's sweet spot. Here's a tip. If your subs hit harder with the trunk open than with it closed means that the sound it been cancelled out. So keep trying.

As for the tech.part. let's see. More power handling, more x max. better sub construction. That's a few. If you subs are 10 years old I bet they have seen their better days.

Your subs will see a total of 300 RMS, 150 RMS each.

    Thanks

Thanks for your help guys. I'd heard of turning the subs around, but I figured that would just rattle my trunk lid, hehe. I'll whip up a temp box for one of the subs and do some trial and error. I'd like to just sell these artifacts and update, but my "waiting on an engagement ring" girlfriend gets this nasty scowl everytime I start talkin' about spending money. I think I'd be safer (for now) to just make the best of what I got.

If I'm understanding you right (Phat), my subs may be getting 300w RMS (in parallel @ 2 ohms) but each one will only realize 150w RMS of it. Correct? That's what I had figured, but I likes to be safe. 300w used to sound like so much, anymore that's barely gettin' started. Oh, when will one of my heathenistic friends ( <<< in jest) unwittingly buy me a winning lottery ticket?

Thanks again, God bless you both.

I would offer to buy you that ticket, but we would have to split it LOL. Yes both speakers will see only 150watts of that power. As for the specs on the enclosure for the subs. Have you tried winISD or any other box building program? You have (for the most part) enough info on the subs to punch some numbers around on that and get a good idea of a decent enclosure.

    Not yet

No, I don't have winISD yet, but I've seen it mentioned / recommended on this forum enough I think I'm going to have to go d/l it. I'll see what it has to say about my relics.

    Splitting is goooood! LOL!

    Thanks man. God bless you.
