better to run them off of an amp though. Most head units only deliver around 18watts RMS.

True for best sound i would run them off an amp, but if you didnt have the money for an amp you can run it off just the HU

I have listened to some Polk DB 6500 in my car with an amp, and now in my wifes Element of the stock HU/Amp, sound good either way, just not as loud without distortion in the Element.
