Hi, new here... checking to see if I got this right.

Hi, new here. Just want to see if I have this right.

I have a 2002 mustang with the Mach 460 stereo system. I plan on adding a single 12" subwoofer by following the instructions on this site http://www.mustangworld.com/ourpics/fcar/despeeds1.htm by using the line out converter. Now, the important stuff. I have a diamond D3 400.2 which will run at 420w at 4 Ohms bridged. So what I'm thinking is I'll need a dual 2 ohm sub. Am I right?

a dual 2 ohm sub or a single 4 ohm is what you'll need to get the most out of your amp

My friend and I took the stang to a stereo shop, where they attached a line out converter for like 60 bucks and it didnt even work. We tried to follow that exact same tutorial but werent sure which exact wires to splice into. It was confusing

Re: Hi, new here... checking to see if I got this right.

    Please re think this, please.

Take it from me, I ran 2 L7s and 2 M6s off of a LOC and it is decent. Both hit really hard but neither sound amazingly great. Just do it right the first time and do what it takes to get an aftermarket HU installed, it is neccesary for a great sounding system.
Also, if you really need a LOC let me know, I have two for sale. And don't worry, neither costs $60 as SSS's buddy got ripped for.
Once again, I still do not suggest it and am not trying to make a buck off of you, an aftermarket cd player is the way to go.

Re: Hi, new here... checking to see if I got this right.

8 guage would be fine, but get 4 guage for like a few bucks more.

upgrading your head unit could be tricky... it would be quite a challenge to hook up the stock amps to an aftermarket head unit. unless you really know your ****, ull have to replace the stock amps and possibly the speakers, I believe they run at an ungodly low impedence. But maybe you can hook up a new HU without doing that, not entirely sure.

The mach 460 just seems like a tough system to work on, maybe someone with some good experience with it could point you in the right direction.

This is just temporary until I get more money... it's only about 30 bucks more for the LOC so I don't think I'll be losing too much to go with this for now. How much for yours?

Oh and about hooking the stock amps up to the head unit my local audio shop sells a thing that lets it communicate fine.

a thing that lets it communicate fine...

its possible a wiring harness would allow an aftermarket head unit to work with the stock amps. I can see why ud want to keep the stock stuff, its a **** nice stock system.

Re: Hi, new here... checking to see if I got this right.

I think the LOC idea would be worth a shot, but be careful, those instructions are confusing as hell. Theres so many similar colored wires we had no idea which one to splice in to. And the factory wires are nice and tight, so they dont leave you much room for error
