big-3 worth DIYing with stock alt?

i remember reading a post around here mentioning DIYing the big-3 would benefit ppl who are running high output alternators rather than those with the low amp alts such as myself (70amp). i believe its true as the factory wiring thats used with the alternator to battery would be large enough to support whatever the alt could handle. by adding additional large wires, it would only give 2 uncessary paths of current. if this is wrong, please correct me.

to my question: i have an 70 amp factory alt in my car still and would like to know if i will notice dramatic improvements by DIYing the big-3?

in the big 3 ur supposed to *** another fused power wire there or just replace that wire with a fused wire........

if you're just adding an extra fused wire then whats the point of haveing the fuse when there's already another wire unfused connecting the same points....can u just add another unfused wire along with the one there?

ahhhh, 70A...i knew i wasn't the only one

    it did help considerably.
for the alt wire.leave the old one in, take it out, it don't matter. but you MUST fuse it!!!

Re: big-3 worth DIYing with stock alt?

very old thread, but i want to follow up on this and complete the big-3

i used 4ga with an 80amp ANL fuse for the alt+ > batt+ and approxmiately 5min after, the 80amp anl fuse blew along with my battery fuse under the fuse box. any idea why this could've happened?

    heres my set-up:
    brutus bx500d (50a)
    4ga power/ground
60amp AGU fuse by the battery

Re: big-3 worth DIYing with stock alt?

who knows...? haha ive heard the same thing from a very reputable guy (17 yrs experience) about not having to up the big 3 unless you up your alt...supposively your stock wiring should take more than enough to supply your batt, etc. I was told that you need a stiffening cap to fix dimming, etc. but who knows many different opinions by wayyy to many people!

Re: big-3 worth DIYing with stock alt?

Probably have a short somewhere or the line drew too much current and popped the fuse. Remember.. 4awg is good for up to 150A. So fuse accordingy and check for shorts.

Don't PM me, I'm not here. Find me on SSA or ROE
    No, I won't re-upload the Big3 pictures. Don't ask.
