Equipment for 86 vette build + choice help

Well I'm rebuilding my 86 Corvette T-top and now I am getting to the interior. I pulled all of the old bose speakers out and the headunit. I have been thinking about what I wanted to do and now am sure that I do not want to take up space in the back with subs, but I still want to hear that bass. So I was thinking about doing some 8" component speakers in the front with 2 3-4" speakers in my B-piller that the T-top is connected to and either 2 6x9's in the back or another set of 2 8" speakers or 8" subs in the back holes.

Now I do want to ask a couple questions
    1. I've heard about the cadence 6x9 600watt sub-6x9's.... are those just a marketing scheme or do those actually bang?
    2. what would you suggest for a high quality 8" component speaker setup / 3-4" speaker / choice on speakers in the back?
    3. and amplifiers to go with it?
    4. The room for the headunit is pretty small but its close to a double din. Do any manufacturers make any aftermarket dash panels for this car or a "slim" double din to fit in this spot?

My budget is under 1200 for speakers / amplifiers.... I really want high quality equipment and anything to be preferably black to match the interior of the car. And I only want new equipment.

    Thank you for your help

I can help you here cdt makes a nice 3 way set with 8" Mids. But. I'd go with a 3 way set the mx369 set a 5 channel amp I have a new alpine Pdx v9 amp new with warranty the cdt set I can sell you as well The deck can only be a single din deck You'll need deadener and wires as well The amp is $400. its going to be tough to find a 3-4" tweeter-mid. If you want to hit the highs you may need to do a 2". Something like the HD 2.

Re: Equipment for 86 vette build + choice help

I'd keep it clean an simple.

    Single din
Clear coaxial speakers 4" and 6x9
Or 8" subs with a mono amp
Or build a box for dual 8" subs up to 1k watts

I'm using coaxials in rear, components fronts all off a deck and its already ear piercing at higher volumes.
With subs in the back to balance it out. No four channel amp.

Re: Equipment for 86 vette build + choice help

Focusing on just one set of good components (3 ways if you have good locations) in good, well deadened front locations will give you everything you need without turning the vehicle into an acoustic nightmare of different sound points and lower quality drivers. A single 8 or 10" woofer in the trunk will do plenty if you get something high quality and have a nice box built. There's a few companies that make a big 6X9 but it'll only be as good as the box you put it in.

Decide on some speakers then look for an amp that will properly power them within your budget and that will fit in the space you're willing to invest.

partsexpress.com has great tang band 3-4" speakers, but what the difference between that and a 2" tweeter alone?

Im not wanting to have a box built in the back that's why I was going to have the two 8" subs be small and high quality to fit in the same location as the 6.5's that were previously there. it has around 4-5" depth but the diameter of the hole is constricting so the fit will be interesting. I was planning on fiberglassing the hole to make it a small sealed box in a sense with probably less than 1cu ft. and that's why I was going to do two component 8's in the front with the extra 3-4" speakers on the B piller wher the t-top sits. If there is something that I'm not understand please by all means call it out because I am just trying to get the most quality out of what I have.
Thank you all for your responses. and any other suggestions on brands / speakers will be much appreciated.

If you're really good at fabricating stuff you may well be able to get some smaller drivers to perform sub duty if you can build sealed enclosures into the location.

Something like this for a 6.5" woofer could do quite a bit if you can actually seal up a box behind it.
Denovo Audio Anarchy woofer DIY Sound Group

My point was simply a 1 cubic foot box would be quick, cheap, and easy to make, not take up much space, and be much simpler than trying to turn stock locations into woofer cabinets AND probably give you more output.

Just keep that as a plan B if you don't feel up to the task of a lot of fabrication.

The factory 6.5" sub boxes in your car are barely adequate for 6.5s, let alone 8s. You would have to do sealed enclosures from scratch if you want them to replace what you already have and give you satisfactory bass.

Where do you plan to fit 8s in the front of that cramped interior?
