Focal Utopia 15", they certainly are pricey. I've only heard the 12".

Is this not a reasonable place to park?

They must make the thing in gold or something. I know focal makes great speakers, but look at the size of the magnet on the sub. I doubt it could hold up against most brands 1/4 the price.

How do you figure this, merely by magnet size?

This sub is a pure SQ sub if there ever was such a thing. And yes they are quite impressive. Although it's a very high price. Everyone I know who uses them is very happy with them.

Ok.. here's my opinion of what a subwoofer does. (though many of you probably disagree) Creates bass. And indeed I will judge on the magnet size. The larger the magnet, the stronger the excursion. (tighter bass) I realize there are a number of other things that make a subwoofer great.. but look at the size of the magnet! My Kappa Perfects probably have just as good sq, and actual BASS (which inludes some boom). Cause, in my opinion, that's what bass is.

Magnet structure size and the response of the subwoofer are independant. The greater the excursion, generally, the lower the efficiency. If you base a subwoofers performance on the the magnet structure instead of the motor structure, what is stopping you from buying a Pyramid subwoofer with triple stacked magnets? Go listen to a Focal Utopia and tell me your pefects will have the same level of sound quality I dare you.

stronger excursion and magnet size, even the strength of the magnetic field doesn't make tighter bass at all.

tighter bass involves a lot to do with qms, qes/qts, mms, voice coil design such as impedance and inductance...

very little to do with the motor or magnet, while, a good motor or magnet helps, it is not the basis of which tight bass is.

I had some spl 12" subs, very small magnet, very tight bass. hehe =)

Precision Power PCX-4125 (for horns and midbasses)
Image Dynamics CD2 comp mini horns
    Scan-Speak 7" 18W/5535A midbasses
    Subs still pending.

yeah magnet really has nothing to do with how good a subwoofer is typically i mean it can affect it a lil bit but mostly just adds weight to the thing. anyway the utopia woofer's are the best sounding woofer's i've ever heard in my entire life, blew away my friends setup with his 2 12" infinity perfect's in Sq. the perfect's won in SPL though but then again the utopia's are pure SQ like ramos said if there ever was such a thing.

Hahaha... I would quote all of those last 3 posts, but I understand that the quality of a subwoofer is based on all sorts of things. And thank you for agreeing with me.

the reason he looks at the magnets is simple....this is how i was before i was educated....look at all those major spl subs....xxx, "power hx2", top of the line dd's, and alot more( to early to think)these subs have major magnets, so its understandable why some one would compare magnet size....ya understand where i'm going with this???
