    Power for 2005 Alpine Type-R

I am thinking about getting one 12" type R. I know they are rated at 500 watts RMS but can they handle more? I have an amp that puts out 500 watts rms at 4ohm and 800 watts rms at 2ohm. Should I get a dual 4ohm sub and give it 800 watts or get a dual 2ohm sub and give it 500 watts? I am going to try several different boxes in my mazda 3 hatch, 1 cuft sealed and 1.5 cuft ported tuned to 32 hz, and maybe 2.2 cuft tuned to 38hz for more spl. I am leaning towards getting a dual 4ohm sub and giving it 800 watts and seeing how it handles it. What do you think?

get dual 4s, since you can always reduce the amount of power you give it by adjusting gains.

A couple of hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn't seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps to the operator: "My friend is dead! What can I do?" The operator, in a calm soothing voice says: Just take it easy. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead? There is a silence, then a shot is heard. The guy's voice comes back on the line. He says: "OK, now what?"

Get the dual 4 ohm, you can turn the gains down if it's too much for the sub.
