I recently won an auction for a pair of ID cd2 comp horns for $331 after shipping. I'm pumped and hope they are not busted and actually arrive! But, in the meantime I'm looking for midbass drivers that will hopefully attempt to keep up with the horns.
I plan on getting 4 midbass drivers mounted in kicks, or kicks doors. I know that is an imaging nightmare, but I look foward to the install challenge.
I was looking at the CDT 6.5" midbass/midrange driver with "controlled" dispersion and it looks really intriguing. It looks like it might fit the bill for me. The rave reviews say that it's flat, neutral and has excellent imaging -- everything I'm looking for. Anyone have any experience with the CDT 6.5" midbass - 2kHz capabilities? $400 bucks for 2 pair
I also looked into scanspeak, vifa and morel drivers. The problem is that a lot of the drivers that look good to me are weird ohms, like 5.7 or 5.5 or something like that.
for these drivers, you can find info and specs on them at www.madisound.com in their catalog and pdf files within the catalog
I like the vifa:
PL18WO09-04 a 7" driver. if this is truly 4ohms, this is nice and has a good price tag too at $65 bucks each. $260 for 4 of them -- it's priced right
18W/5535A a 7" driver. these are 4 ohms, but more pricey than all the other things I'm looking at. They also seem to have killer midbass response and have the longest excursion that I know of, 5.5 mm but at a price of around $120 each, the total is $480
H6.1 is a 6" driver. Seem to have very good midbass response and priced decently at $80 each and have decent sensitivity of 91 dB 1w/m. The only thing I really don't like about these is that they have a dc resistance of 5.6 ohms and xmax of 3.5mm.
Could you guys steer me in the right direction? I'm having such trouble deciding and I just don't know enough about what really matters in midbass/midrange to make a solid decision. I thought that I could use 6 in total, 3 a side of the H6.1 morels to get roughly a 2 ohm load, but, talk about install problems and imaging hell... I'd have to mount a pair in the doors and 2 pairs in the kicks... yikes... my frontstage would look cool though!
