Icon13 Whats the deal with my dub 7? **** has got me.

i just finished yesterday building a new box for my 13w7. I built to the specifications in my owners manual for a ported box (tuned to 30hz, took me a ridiculous 2 days to do it right). Playing at low volume it sounds beautiful as expected. However when i turn it up some more (not real loud, just enough to feel the sub movin) the sub begins to make a strange sound in correlation with the harder parts of the song's beat. I'm not quite sure how to describe online, but i can tell you its not a sound you would like to hear from a sub. I'm pretty sure (close to positive) that it is not clipping or anything caused by the amp. The only thing i did with the box that wasnt mentioned in the manual was i put foam padding on some of the inner walls (i was advised to do this because it supposedly makes the sub have a softer touch, makes it sound a little cleaner). Could this foam be the culprit?
    thanks for any help

If you arent overly familiar with the construction of the cone on your sub, this is going to sound odd to you. The cone of your sub is made of two pieces, the part you see, and a part that looks like an inverted cone. These two are glued together when built. JL calls it a W Cone assembly or something to that effect. It sounds like to two are separating. I have seen this happen several times on the W7s at work. Tap the cone gently all around it and see if the noise is reproduced. That is where i would start diagnosing the problem man.

May sound stupid but are you sure your box doesn't have any air leaks mainly around the hole that the sub set in.

    Dear Mr. 'Ask 5109' ,
I think it's safe (at the oh-so-horrible risk of being wrong) to make the assumption that you are young. I also think that it is safe to make another assumtion that you're actual knowledge and understanding match up with your stunning maturity and All-Knowing special powers. If you would like to explain to me the physics behind the effects of time on different materials that make up a subwoofer then i am all ears and i will happily shutup and listen, and i will argue unless you prove me wrong or make me think otherwise. I could be wrong but I'm usually not, my guess is you can't even come close to explaining WHY or HOW time-in-use relevantly (and positivley, good way) affects the applicable performance of a subwoofer. 'Ask 5109' : shove it.

    --------------
crhye250r: the idea is definitley appreciated.....i've never heard of it but it definitley makes sense. tapping or playing with the sub doesnt give any clues tho....no noises or anything else abnormal....any other ideas?
    ---------------
josh: i caulked the crap outta this thing...but i noticed that there's a little bit of air leakin outta the speaker terminals....but i dont think that this would actually make the sub produce a sound like this....or any sound at all for that matter.....but the more i think about it, as crazy as acoustics are you could be right

    thanks for the ideas

You'd be surprised at the sounds that an air leak can cause. I'd definately fix that leak and see if it fixes the problem.

This could be the problem. I had a similar incidence with an HC and it just sounded totally off, then I noticed the top cone portion was coming loose.

It's an easy fix and makes your feel a lot better when that god awful noise stops

    Good luck,

Is there any chance that your crossover on your amp is set just out of the playable range for the sub in this type of a box? Another idea.

well, are you sure the ports aren't vibrating in the box? i've had that happen to me before, and couldn't figure out what the F was wrong w/ the sub.. it was hitting deep fine, but when it hit a higher freq it sounded like the sub was buzzing (was just the box). Also, did you use 1" mdf? i heard JL reccomends 1" for the W7

Re: Whats the deal with my dub 7? **** has got me.

the box has a slot port so theres no vibration possible by the port walls really....the manual tells me that i should use a 1" baffle for the w7....which i didnt do.....i finished caulking that terminal real good so we'll see if that takes care of it....im still waiting for JL to get back to me via email.
    thanks
