i'd say alpine because i've had w3's, but if he's gonna sell one super cheap might just jump on that till you save the money for a good sub!!!

I'd also venture to say those idmax 10's are better than the type r or w3

Re: Alpine Type R 12" or JL 12W3 for a sealed enclosure

Thank you so much for all this help! I have spent about 8 hours more research since ur recommendation. That may seem like a tiny amount to some of you but i am now also considering a Dayton HO 12". I was told that any of these subs will provide some good loud bass given that i have never had a sub in my car and have nothing to compare them to. I live in a small town and the closest audio shop is 45 min away but im going there tomorrow. They said i could listen to some sealed and ported subs and get a better idea of what i want. I know that in the show room the subs will sound a little differently. If any of you have personal experience with the dayton HO do you prefer it in a sealed or ported? I found a box that is specifically for it that you assemble yourself but is sealed Knock-Down MDF 1.5 ft³ Subwoofer Cabinet for Dayton Audio 12 300-7077 any opinions on this box also?
