The sub has a role in sound quality and loudness and performance that someone wants as well right?

Definitely.
Re: Multiple subs vs single large sub
You know, im going to say what hasnt been said yet. Lows? DAD BD 12s....
I havent heard a pair of 12s as nasty as 2 DAD BD on 2k. 2 of them in 5 cubes did a 136db @ 17hz, and a 146.9 @ 40
Re: Multiple subs vs single large sub
First time poster here and a noob audiophile. As an extension to this question, can I get similar bass response out of say 4 6" speakers as a single 12". Surface area is the same. I'd like to build a false floor in the back of a 4runner and the shorter depth of the 6's is attractive.
Looking forward to your responses.
Cheers,
Vince
Re: Multiple subs vs single large sub
powerhandling won't be the same on 4 6's and neither will excursion. four 6inch drivers can probably match a low end 12, but a higher end 12 is likely to have more overall SPL by a fair margin.

Correct, but the silly myth that sub-par audio shops keep telling people about how they think a 10" sub sounds better then an 18" sub as if the size of the cone has direct bearing on the sound quality or that the 10" sub plays higher and tighter etc.

you can easily do 4 12s. Ive seen 2 18s..
Re: Multiple subs vs single large sub
that 05 has 18.6 cu ft in the trunk... Plenty of space if you want to use the entire thing... my 2 12's take up about half of my trunk (02 impala). your goal SQ or raw SPL?
Re: Multiple subs vs single large sub
I like reading all of this since I have a 2004 Impala SS and am making changes to my current setup. I have been running my 2 OA 12's in a sealed box and like the way they sound currently. I'm having a ported enclosure built with about 3.5 cf of space. Just going to up the power.

On what power and electrical? You must've had that thing in a massive box. And i'd like to see it.
