+1 on the JBL W12, W15 GTI series subs. Depth can be an issue for some, but these are truly outstanding subs.

In my language "smooth bass sound" is when you have reasonably smooth frequency response, so that none of the frequencies is overbearing. This is more of a function of box design and/or tuning equalizer than specific subwoofer. Next, "full sound" is the opposite of "not full". When sound is not "full" then something is missing, as in a hole in frequency response, say at a certain frequency range. Again, this is a function of tuning and careful integration work. If these things are a function of tuning, then what part of SQ is subwoofer responsible for? Probably distortion and transient response. You want subwoofer to have as little non-linear distortion as possible. Next, you want the subwoofer to have good transient response, so it can respond well to transients.

Judging by popularity of SQ subs on DIYMA, these have very good reputation: Image Dynamics IDQv3 and IDMAXv3 (soon v4), Arc Audio Arc, Arc Audio Black, JL W6, W7, JBL WGTI, Morel Ultimo, Morel Ultimo SC, Stereo Integrity, Peerless XXLS, Scanspeak Discovery (XXLS clone), Boston Acoustics subs (G5 in particular), Aura subwoofers, and probably many others.. These are just the most popular ones, there exist many others of course.

Re: Some of the best SQ subs ever made..?

All brand name dropping aside you will want to look for a woofer that has a relatively low/equal ratio of Le:Re. Inductance and, more importantly, bandwidth are what you are really after when it comes to sound quality. Bandwidth is directly correlated to transient response (as dictated by the Fourier Transform) so you do not want a one note wonder if you're after SQ. A smooth, broad, response is king.
