Dual Voice Coil subwoofer not reading same ohms at coils
I could smell and bad smell coming frommy sub last night.
So I pulled it out and visually inspected it, it seemed fine. So i pulledout the DMM
and tested the voice coils. Coil 1 read 4 ohms and coil 2 read 2.5 ohms.
DOes this mean the coil is damaged? Will this sub still be usuable?
When they are wire together I get 1.7 ohms and my amp wants 2ohms, will this be okay?
or will the one coil with the lower ohms take more power and end up blowing?
Re: Dual Voice Coil subwoofer not reading same ohms at coils
I bet you can answer this question yourself, can't you.
You were clipping your amp and have damaged 1 of your coils.
What amp were you using, what is your setup for your power and ground wires.
How do you have the gain set?
Do you have bass boost set on the amp or head unit?

Your sub is dead. RIP clippy

*hangs heads*
Yes!
I was using mrp-m2000 with a 0gauge stinger wire. Also have a 320a alt with big 3 in o gauge.
gain is at about 30% of the dial, not set with a dmm ( i know i got impatient and f'd up) and bass boost is about 4db or so.
the hu volume was about 35 out of 50, the sub level on the hu is at 8 of 10. thats not the same as bass boost tho is it? All other settings have the deck were not set yet.
Basically I just wanted to know if the sub is garbage or not?
Re: Dual Voice Coil subwoofer not reading same ohms at coils
I'm 99% sure the sub is trash. What sub was it?
Re: Dual Voice Coil subwoofer not reading same ohms at coils
You may be able to use the sub for a bit but it is not really worth it, I have heard of a few times where a shorted out VC has caused damage to the amp.
You do not need any bass boost set on the amp at all.

Sub was garbage to begin with and 2.5 inch coil will fail on 1000W pretty fast

Well i got it used for $200. What other sub would you recommend I replace this with?
Re: Dual Voice Coil subwoofer not reading same ohms at coils
kickers coil wont handle 1k for long thats for sure. its the fact the motor dosent have good cooling and the coil is the weak link.
any clipping on that sub and burnt....
Re: Dual Voice Coil subwoofer not reading same ohms at coils
So point me in a better direction then kicker...
