How is this possible and will it catch on? Infinity Kappa 120.9w sub

I was browsing subs and came across the new Infinity Kappa 120.9W sub. This sub has a "Selectable Smart Impedance (SSI) technology allows this sub to run at 2 Ohms or 4 Ohms with the flick of a switch"

So many questions... How is this possible, are there 2 coils?
Is it true 2 and 4 ohm or more like 2.9 and 3.6 ohms?
How does box rise come into play?
And will it catch on with other manufacturers?
How do I adjust my gains? j/k

Apologies if this has been answered already.

From what I understand is that was a 3 coil setup that they used to build the switch feature.

No it won't catch on, just like the variable Q option they had.

I would explain a little better, but I'm not sure what exact coil setup they use. I know it is a 3 coil setup, but that is it. I would assume it is not a true 2 or 4 ohm though.

Re: How is this possible and will it catch on? Infinity Kappa 120.9w sub

Kinda nifty ,but how many times dose someone need to change impedance on their subs to need a switch.

I would guess its 3 1.3XX ohms coils and and the 2 rated impedance are a few points off from true. like 3 1.4ohm coils would ether be 4.2ohm and 2.142.... ohms. when you think about the affects of box rise i guess being a little off doesn't really matter, especially if your the type of person to have more amplifier that needed.

From a retail perspective it would cut down on the need for stocking several different coil options.

I think its a cool idea if you want to try a different amp down the road that maxes out at a different impedance or if you wanted to add/drop subs and keep the same amp. I hear these are pretty nice sounding subs as well . Thought about trying one out.

eh... easier way would be to run studs through the box for both coils and wire from the outside.. never need to remove the sub then even to just flick a switch

really so you have a dual 2 ohm that you could run at 4ohm or 2ohm? read it..

these have a third coil so they can run at really any ohm you needed

It would be nice for SPL I think. Say you run at 2 ohm daily for 1kw and could flip a switch and wire to 1/2ohm for 2k+ for burps. Not very practical since you would still have to take the sub out etc... But still easier than rewiring everything.. lol

Re: How is this possible and will it catch on? Infinity Kappa 120.9w sub

I have one of those subs in my car now. a older model thats a switchable 2 or 8 ohm imp. I always had it a 2 ohms though for 350 watts max. I have a Alpine MRP -M450 amp pushing 400 watts at 2 ohms in a 03 Honda Accord. Honestly, the sub... DID well with hiphop music. Until one day I added polyfill in the enclosure, (no real clue why other then reading random online ish), played a track wiith HEAVY bass for a good 5 mins straight and suddenly, no bass. Took that ish out, put sub back in, sub would bang hard for a good amount of time as long as the bass wasnt too deep and loud, then... no bass. Now when i tap on the sub at different spots i get a rattling within the sub and i have no clue on how to repair subs. Could be that the sub blew because of an extra 50 watts and polyfill, but if so, i believe the sub would be considered sh*t. Basically to sum it all up, I wouldnt recommend one. For the same price, I got my eye on a Sundown brand ( for no real reason other then reading random online ish).
