    myths about sub sizes

I've been told by most professionals that subwoofer sizes affect the type of bass you will hear. They say that smaller size woofers have faster transient response resulting in more accuracy where as larger woofers get louder and lower but will lose accuracy with metal/hard rock. however, I've read some posts hear that say it's just a myth. Does it really boil down to cone material and mechanics or both?

Its dependent on a bunch of things, power, box, tuning, rest of the install, etc.

    Re: myths about sub sizes

In some loose sense that is correct due to more moving mass... However that has very little affect what really matters is the Box...

My next install will be a sealed enclosure, and I'm toggling back and forth between 10's or 12's

the subs I'm looking at recommend .66 sealed and the box I'm trying to match it with is .76 per chamber plus have poly fiber fill. Do you think this would cause a problem?

No. Because with driver displacement you'll probably be right around .66 sealed anyways.
And as others said, it's more to do with the overall install than the particular driver. Especially the enclosure design.

    Re: myths about sub sizes

Very informative read up. What made me curious is when he said a ported box can sound as good as a sealed box. the result is lower distortion because of the added spl from the port thus allowing you not to have run your subs as hard. Also sealed boxes cause non linear excursion. So besides space saving what are sealed boxes good for because I always heard they were better for sound quality?

    Re: myths about sub sizes

it depends on if the woofer is made for sealed or not. I've heard some sealed setups that sound like ported.

    Re: myths about sub sizes

I think someone also said smaller subs resonate at higher frequencies better than large ones.
