How to rebuild a voice coil, step one.

I posted this on SiN too, but haven't gotten a response yet. I'm truly curious how to rebuild/rewind a voice coil. I've blown so many subs, I think it'd be really beneficial to learn how. I'm assuming it takes tools/ materials that aren't easily obtainable. Anyone have any experience doing this?

are you good and hand winding things? you'll need tons of precision to get the job done. Not to mention you gotta know how the coil was wired before it was blown. Doesn't make sense to have a woofer that had say 40 windings, and later you wind it out to only 35 with different gauge wire. Can be done, but will performance be the same? Probably not. You also have to find wires that have and outer coating on them, because you don't want bare copper/aluminum/or whatever touching each other.

Its a time consuming project and a little mistake can alter the sound a whole lot.

    It's not an easy task...

Like sissy boy Gsteg said, you have to get the proper gauge and windings on the VC...as well as correct size diameter...and the coil needs to be aligned perfectly...

I've come across a few internet sites that sell basically everything you will need to replace a speaker...but they are decently expensive when not bought in bulk...

I'm not a sissy...you were the one that didn't want to come out of the closet last time.

and yea, aligning the coil is very icky. I took apart my idmax to toy around with (don't ask what i did with the vented pole piece ) and when i putted the cone/coil back, i got some nasty rubbing. Don't feel like shipping in the sub and pay $50+ to get it fixed. Grab a couple testtones, about 300 watts free-air, 1 hour or play time, and whala! good as new

nearly impossible / impractical to wind a coil yourself..
