Well, I'm changin' it up... I think we all get the point that all modern hip hop slams. If you wanna hear some heavy bass on a good rap album, pick up Most Known Unknowns by Three 6, seriously one of the BEST albums I've ever heard, heavy abss or not...
Anyway, here are some songs that aren't just meant to push car audio subwoofers to the extreme... but do it anyway...
2:25 into You Eclipsed by My by Atreyu... good lord that slams. I thought my IDQs were gonna fall apart every time that part came around. It's just one note, but it adds another dimension to the end of a semi-breakdown in a good song. Plus, the song has a solid kick drum recording with loads of double bass runs.
Too Many Humans by Buckethead off Population Override... you gotta wait till about 1:25 for it to come in... after the slightly boring intro, but good lord it wangs, and has lots of melody to it unlike a lot of these test tones you here in a lot of rap songs. The rest of the song is really good (the whole album is, if you like good instrumental work I would pick it up) And the first song goods pretty loud, too.
Oh yeah, almost all the Colma album by Buckethead is really overbearingly loud... the album is very simple, but it's very good... but the lack of a "big" sound to go along with this crazy over-eq'd kick drum and bass lines gets really in your face loud.
Oh yeah, Wounded by Third Eye Blind off Blue will hit as hard as ANY rap song you can name... it shook the rear-view mirror off my Eclipse just as quick as LNT. Very heavy bass... and a really good song, very moving lyrics. The rest of the album has good kick drum recordings and solid bass lines aswell, but nothing like Wounded.
For some geniusly recorded bass guitar, look into the Four Wall Blackmail album by Dead Poetic... if I ever had a recodring band, I would first contact their producers to see how they got such an amazing bass guitar recording... seriously, it's like elongated bass lines found on rap songs done by a guitar and sounds amazing.
For the ultimate kick drum recodring (but I have a feeling it was reached more by eq'ing than actual recording or mic placement techniques), look no farther than the Artist in the Ambulance album by Thrice... that's a rude kick drum recording, I mean that kick bass slams. And the most popular song, Stare at the Sun, is the best example of how powerful of a kick bass recording they have.
An amazing double bass recording is This Dying Soul by Dream Theater... really kicks, like rap song hard... When I first installed my E120s, I played all kinds of rap songs for hours, just letting those subs get loose... then, just a 30 seond run into a rock n roll song's gonna go and break one of the Os. I mean, I just let the subs bang out Late Nite Tip and all the other rap song you can think of... but they just coudln't handle the repetative abuse as fast and low as that kick bass recodring.
Those are some good non-rap abss songs you guys can check out... I'd love to see people post more non-rap stuff... I mean, I know a rap song is gonna slam, but I love finding that some "emo-phags" like Thrice got heavier bass than Lil Jon, haha.
