Icon32 Can I run two mono amps as two channels for comps?

    Got two identical amps, old ALpine 3548's.....60x2 @ 4 ohm, 80x2 @ 2 ohm, or 160X1 @ 4 ohm.

Now this would be for my comps, so I need stereo.

Could I run my left rca to one amp and the right rca to the other? Then wire the amps for bridged mono mode (160x1) with a right channel amp and a left channel amp?

Since the left channel rac input says "mono" on the amp, would I have to run the right channel rca into the left channel input on the amp? Would the amp work with only one rca plugged into it (right side rca input would have nothing plugged in on either amp since left channel rca input is labeled "mono")?

Is this doable or am I talking silly? Seems like it'd work to me

Re: Can I run two mono amps as two channels for comps?

im not sure if itd work but i dont think so. I have a problem where on my HU where i only have 1set of RCA outputs. I just got my speaker amp and ill be hookin it up tomorow so i got some Y conectors to split up the RCA's into 2. But why would u wana bridge the amps for each component. Bridging raises THD. Just use 1 amp 60 watts it splenty for components

Well I have one on the comps now, and it's not loud enough for me. Yeah the thd will raise from .08% to .3%, but I've heard that most people can't even hear 1%.

I'd just buy a bigger 2 channel amp, but I wanna spend my money on better subs. This other amp is just collecting dust, so I figured I'd give it a try.

    Absolutely it will work.

Some purists go that way, ultimate in stereo separation.

Well if I got everything to do it with, I'll do it tonight

But my mission is not over. I need to find a better way to mount my CL-61 6.5's. Need to get some mdf I guess and build spacer rings. Then I need better subs, maybe even a new box. Then I'll be done.....well ok, prolly not lol

Indeed. The more you isolate each individual driver from the other, the better control you have over sonic reproduction, and the more you can eliminate distortion/noise/etc. Some day, perhaps, I'll be able to afford a system like that.

Josh, what about the problems you could run into using two D-Class amplifiers and their not being designed for higher frequencies and what not...

Er... I'm pretty sure the amps he was talking about were Class AB. It would not be good to run Class D on anything other than a woofer. I believe the distortion would rise considerably in that scenario.

whoops didn't read right... I thought (because of the title) he was planning on running mono amps (generally speaking class D).

Re: Can I run two mono amps as two channels for comps?

Well I'm pretty sure they are a/b. Thought I read that, but not sure where. It's made to run mids/highs, so I assume it is.

Anyway I tried it out and it's louder, not as much as I thought it'd be, but the gains are slightly less that 1/4 way up on each amp. RCA outs are 2V on my Pioneer, and the amp's gains are from 2V to 100mV, so I guess I have them set around 1.5V. When I had just one amp on the comps, it's gains was almost at half way which is .5V.

Now I only have 18 guage running about 18 feet to the comps.....maybe I need bigger wire to feed these xtra watts to them and get the xtra volume I still want? It just seems a lil quiet for 320watts to the fronts. Now I've always had systems with rear fill....so maybe I'm just loosing some of that volume from not running rear fill now?

This may sound stupid, but I'm suprised at how little my 6.5's move. Even when listening to music with heavy midbass, they seem to not move hardly at all. My doors are not sealed well due to my quick ghetto install....would sealing help this out?

Thanks for all the info guys
