Sub or not to sub (for rock)

I have been debating whether or not to buy a sub.
I'm definitely not a fan of big bass. (probably just answered my question right there)

I am simply looking for a way to listen to my music with great accuracy. I want to hear what i am supposed to hear. I am a big fan of balanced music. I have a pair of studio monitors sitting on my desk next to me that i love to death. They have 8" cones and 1" tweeters. Event Tuned Ref 8 (TR8)

When double bass kicks in on those, i can still feel and hear each individual hit of the drum, It is very tight.

In my car I am trying to achieve similar results on a budget. I have the Alpine 9887 head unit and I have stock everything else, i will be buying some new comps and other stuff. Lately i'm just thinking that 6.5" speakers should have plenty of bass for my needs.

I am looking for SQ not SPL

I listen to Death Cab for Cutie to acoustic rock to Breaking Benjamin to Metallica.
Basically Acoustic, rock, classic rock, Alt rock, 80's Metal and hard rock

Re: Sub or not to sub (for rock)

My budget for the rest of the system is $450 maybe...maybe 500 and that with all cables.

My car is an SUV. Honda CR-V 2000, 1st gen LX trim

Whats left to buy? well the only thing i have is the head unit and a monster cable 8 gauge amp kit. I don't care about the my rear passengers sound...i don't sit in the back seats.

Re: Sub or not to sub (for rock)

I would either do the 3 way setup. Or just a 10 and a small amp just to give the music a little more depth.

This, tweets, 6.5" mids, and 8"s for lower mids.

I would be a procrastinator, but I keep putting it off.

I would do at least 5.25, I have owned 2 sets of 4" mids and was highly dissapointed with both of them.

Re: Sub or not to sub (for rock)

    Get a sub dude.

You can turn the sub level on the HU or the gain on the amp low so you get just enough low end where it adds to the sound but doesnt over power it.

Atleast we enjoy it though. We also can get near infinite use out of our equipment.

Re: Sub or not to sub (for rock)

I listen to the same types of music. A sub really helps fill in the bottom end that you just can't get from a 6.5". I have a single sealed 12" and my friends don't even realise I have a sub till I play something with a heavy bass line...thats SQ lol.

Look into CDT CL-S60A comps for the front & a MB Quart RWE-302 for the sub stage with a Cadence Xa 175.4 to power it all.
If you can step up the budget look into ID CTX comps &/or an IDQ12V2.D2 sub.
