Anyone change out Factory Sub for Yukon or Suburban?

I've got a 2001 GMC Yukon XL that I'm starting some phases of upgrade too. I just installed all new Alpine speakers this weekend. My real question is, has anyone installed a better quality sub in place of the factory sub? I believe it might actually be a factory powered sub so if I get all the trim out of the way, I'm thinking I can replace it and possibly put an amp with it in place of the stock setup. Hopefully I'm making sense here. I'd love to hear of someone that has done this or some recomendations. Just want a neat and clean setup when I'm done.

Just disconnect the factory sub and build a box for a real sub

I'm not wanting to go overboard and I need the cargo space so I'm going to see if I can fit a good quality sub in there with a decent amp to run it.

Was there a factory amp of any kind back by the sub? Just curious if there's a power source back there to hook up an amp? I guess I'll have to figure out how to pull the side panel off back there and check it out.

Got any pointers on removing the trim to get to the sub? I hate pulling around on the trim when I don't know where the clips are. I'm ready to dig into that and see what I can do in there.

Re: Anyone change out Factory Sub for Yukon or Suburban?

you can build an enclosure that will fit in the stock location and be much more sturdy. all of the factory sub enclosures i've seen have been made out of plastic.

may have to go fiberglass, but i'm betting you can get away with mdf. if nothing else, pull the stock enclosure out and reinforce the hell out of it. any flexing it does will be lost output.

That's kinda what I was thinking. I may try to pull the trim out today and scope the situation, take measurments and such. I did see that MTX makes a Bass Slammer enclosure loaded with a 10" sub or you can get it powered. I don't know the quality and I've not heard of anyone having one yet. That would make it easier.

I've not made it to far. I'm leaning toward putting a 8" slim Kicker in place of the factory sub. Using the stock sub box. For what I have and want, I'm crossing my fingers that it will work good enough. It doesn't sound to terribly bad now so I'd think with a good quality sub in there, it will sound better. The box will need minor modification to put an after market sub in it. Definately needs to be a slim or low profile type. Sorry I can't be any more help. Oh, you can get an MTX Thunderform loaded with a 10" sub and 200 watt built in amp. It's about $500.
