Um, try 13W7's with a Crossfire VR 2000D per coil in a Honda Civic

Car Sound has tested the 13W7 to take peak bursts in the neighborhood of 40,000 watts, that isn't a typo!

Go read their review on the 13W7, get a little more "edumacated" then come back and talk.

Yes. Richard Clark sent a Brahma 32KW for a burp, it held up just fine. I wouldn't doubt the claim.

Is this not a reasonable place to park?

I can believe that it took 40k at a short burst. Obviously for more than a few seconds it would probably start to burn up the voice coils, but I can believe it happened.

The W7, Brahma, Kicker L7, and probably a few others can take insane amounts of power for burps. Of course, it's pretty rare for anybody to throw 30-40kw at a sub, simply because it's much more efficient to split that power up to a couple dozen subs and hit much higher SPL numbers. I'd imagine that a sub would reach the limits of it's voice coils pretty fast with that sort of power.

The W7 definately isn't an SPL sub, but that doesn't mean it can't take a severe beating. For the money, it better be able to

I am not one to promote burping with extravagant amounts of power...anything over 10,000 to a sub such as the W7/Brahma, is pointless. Remember, the Audiobahn Natural Sound Subs have taken burps well into the 7000 range, and they are, what, 75 dollars? The fact is, all subs have mechanical limits...throwing unnecessary amounts of power at them is just as good as throwing double (or in some cases, triple) the rms rating to them.

Depends on the Battery source(s) and amp.

Well, let's see.. here's a couple amps that would be worth looking at (there are others, these are just off the top of my head):

    Zapco C2K-9.0XD: 1x2200W @ 2ohm (theoretically can peak around 3600W)
    JBL BPX2200.1: 1x2200W @ 2ohm (theoretically can peak around 4400W)
    Earthquake PH-D3: 1x6000 @ ?ohm (that's rated RMS, peak is 12,000W??)

Let's keep it simple and go for the PH-D3. These can be had for about $800 new. Let's just say they push 10,000W peak to keep everything simple. Wiring four of these up to a single amp would get you the crazy 40kW number. So, we've now spent $3200 on amps. Not bad for the power, actually.

We can assume, based on EQ's claimed 85% efficiency and a 14.4V input that you'd need roughly 800A of current per amplifier in order to hit 10,000W. Multiply that by four amps and you're looking at 3200A of current required.

One Stinger SP1700 battery can discharge 1700A for 5 seconds. So, you'd need two of these in order to supply the amps with enough current for a 5-second burp. These are about $300 a piece last I checked. We're up to $3800 now. We will assume that recharging of the batteries is handled elsewhere, and that no constant power feed is needed.

Now, the wire required to run from the batteries to the amps is a minimum of 1/0 guage direct to each amp with a 1000A ANL fuse (if you can even find such a beast). After all is said and done, we'd need about $200 for all the wiring, fuses, fuse holders, etc. We've now spent $4000.

Let's go ahead and get a 13W7 to test this all out on, since it has a DVC setup to help simplify the wiring (unlike a 12W7). That's about $750 online. We don't care about the warranty, do we?

Ok, now we need a massive ported enclosure tuned to, say, 70hz (anything lower and we'd max out the physical limits of the sub right away). Figure on about $100 for the materials to build it (think bracing.. lots and lots of bracing).

    The total is now $4850.

The sub "box", amps, batteries, etc are all securely bolted into the back of a large van which has it's doors closed and all glass replaced with solid metal panels. It's been fully sound deadened to help maximize the pressure levels. The source unit is a simple one with at least 5V pre-outs and it has a CD with just a 70hz test tone inside and ready to play. Everything has been tuned for maximum power with no clipping.

The big day arrives.. we're going to test this baby at full power for the first time.

We double check to make sure all the connections are good, the batteries are fully charged, and everything is bolted down. Wearing ear protectors, one of us climbs into the van and flips on the HU. It is set to start playing the CD right off, so within a couple seconds, the excitement begins. A loud bang is heard, then the sound of rubber smacking onto metal. We shut the HU off and open the back doors. What do we find? The sub shot the cone clean off and into the back of the doors. The voice coils are still smoking, and the stench of it fills the air. A few minutes later, a police officer arrives. Someone called the cops because they thought they heard a gun shot...

Why'd I write that little story?

loyd told me that what happens to subs under closed conditions like this have nothing to do with how much a sub can take for daily driving. the word he used was 'irrelevant' i believe. i remember it from a long *** time ago for some reason...
