    It is measured in decibels (dB). Every 3 dB is a doubling of sound volume. So 6 dB is twice as loud as 3 dB and 9 dB is 4 times as loud as 3 dB.
    Also, and I'm not positive about this, but isn't sound inverse squared. Meaning every time you double your distance from the speaker the sound level is divided by 4.

    SPL is a scientific term for how loud something is, the higher the #, the louder it is.

    wouldn't that mean if you're 2ft away from your sub box and it's hitting 160db, when you're 4 feet away you're only hitting 40db? i know that can't be right

    Your thinking dB is linear but it is logarithmic. If you doubled your distance you should fall off by 6 dB (?).
