It is measured in decibels (dB). Every 3 dB is a doubling of sound volume. So 6 dB is twice as loud as 3 dB and 9 dB is 4 times as loud as 3 dB.
Also, and I'm not positive about this, but isn't sound inverse squared. Meaning every time you double your distance from the speaker the sound level is divided by 4.

SPL is a scientific term for how loud something is, the higher the #, the louder it is.![]()

wouldn't that mean if you're 2ft away from your sub box and it's hitting 160db, when you're 4 feet away you're only hitting 40db? i know that can't be rightOriginally posted by 51t

Your thinking dB is linear but it is logarithmic. If you doubled your distance you should fall off by 6 dB (?).

D***!!! thats confusing if you dont read it carefully!Originally posted by Jmac
That would mean it would sound like it was 154 dB :p
97 dB is half as loud as 100 dB
103 dB is twice as loud as 100 dB and four times as loud as 97 dB
106 dB is twice as loud as 103 dB and four times as loud as 100 dB and eight times as loud as 97 dB![]()
