    ported / sealed ??

okay today i ordered my 12 jlw6v2.....the rms is 400 watts i'll have it wired at 4ohms and be sending it b/w 350-400 watts...

the website for my amp says 350@4ohm, but when i opened the box it says 400@4ohm... i'm not going to bench test this amp either - its not that serious..

    anyways....

okay i know this 1 sub won't out do 2 jlw3v2s ported that i had, but i'm having a ruff decision on whether to go sealed or ported for one...

i know for a fact that when i eventually get my 2nd jlw6v2 i'm going to go sealed - and that'll be my final setup for a long time as far as subs go - (i do have a ported box they can go in though)...

    which should i do???

get it ported or sealed..... i love the accuarcy of a sealed but i love the loudness of a port? help folks ...... the decision is up to you all......

    things to come
    3rd -6.5 alpine type r components
1st -alpine amp listed below the channel will be repaired and it will be installed
2nd -the pioneer amp will be sold for cheap $100
4th -either get another jlw6v2 (if not happy w/just one) or mp3 player....
5th -sell the coaxils 6.5 that were in the spot where components are/give them to my sister for free

i'm a port guy myself if built right, it can be as accurate as a sealed box with more umph to it.

u said built right.... what specs u recommend for the subs in a ported box for it to be "built right"..... thing is i highly doubt i'm going to have the sub tuned too.... not sure about that yet...... and i'm not building the box either....... (no time, and i'll get a girl to pay for my box to get built)

I would go with ported also. Just to bump that 400 watts out of control.

make a dual chamber box, 1 sealed 1 ported.

im in the middle of building a box, and ichoose to go sealed because i listen to jazz and stuff like that with high quality bass, but i also wanted to blend in some boomy bass, i was th inking of building a dual chamber box with one sealed chamber and the other chamber ported this i figured would give u both sounds together, just like a two way speaker gives you good mids and good highs unlike those cheap factory speakers which have to comprimise both sounds. if you need help let me know i can draw a diagram of what i had in mind and i might be able to design it for you and give u the measurements so that if you build it, you can tell me how it sounds compared to both types and this way i might make one my self.

    Hard decision..
I'd prolly go with a sealed box, less hastle. Generally a ported box is louder than a sealed. Although, when you port a box you need more power. As well if your running loud, subsonic filter on the amp would be a bonus for a ported enclosure.

Jmac explain your therory (sp) about "more bass more power" i dont get it
and if you have a ported box (just to anyone) play it with the port open, then if a small enough port for your hand to cover, cover it with your hand and see the difference in bass... ported is a lot louder... go ported man.

so, if i make a sealed box and i dont like the sound, ill just cut a port hole in it, wont that make it sound a little boomier? speaking of that, is there a box that is between a sealed and ported demensions, that you can cover the port hole to change the sound?

holy **** man... im getting a 12w6v2, but witha jl 500/1 amp (you baby / jk) and im getting a ported box. the w6v2 will already have pleanty of sq, and if im putting it in my trunk i wanna make sure i can hear it. on the jl website it will tell you the specification of the box, but on a ported box it recommends 1.25 - 1.75 cubic feet of space, and on a enclosed i think its 1-1.5
i think the ported would overall sound better, but if you getting 2 or something space can become an issue. heres what i would say.... if you going with a sub, you want something beyond normal speaker bass, and you want it loud. might as well get a ported, ported is MUCH louder. plus if you going to get an enclosed in the future for both, then you should DEFINITELY get the ported just to test it out.

mb quart reference comps rsc213 rear fills
    jl 300/4 amp powering speakers

    50square feet of Second SKin

    soon to come...
2 magnum D2's powered by 2 nine.1's (for 2500w) in a sealed box, hopefully FG

I think i'm going to go w/a large sealed box..

currently the 2 w3v2s that i have are ported and i don't like it... i liked them better when they were sealed just because the bass was extremely tight..... the decison though b/w what to do will be made by next week... ......

reason why i'm going sealed on both is ..... they are better and louder than the w3v2s that i have.. even if i have the w3v2s ported and (when i get a 2nd one) the w6v2s sealed will be louder,
correct me if i'm wrong.... -> 2jl w3v2 ported not as loud as 2jlw6v2 sealed

so i'll benifit from them being accurate and louder..... (save some **** space too)...

-I get the sub on Wednesday - so we'll see

do you think i should get a sealed box for my 12w6v2? its got a jl 500/1 so more power than needed... i was planning on a ported box, but i would like it to sound good, but also power. what do you think for one? (space is kinda an issue)
