How much power is to much for a 12" Type-r??

I recently replaced my (2) 10" infinity perfects for a single 12" type-r. When i installed it i set the gains so that the sub would see 500w rms. I noticed some people on here saying they give the type-r 1000w and it takes it no problem.

What do you guys think?? The box specs are in my sig. Also Im using a viper 1200.1 to power the sub??

    How much is to much??

that sub will take 1000RMS daily without a problem.. some people are running them on 1500RMS

do some searchin though man, you will find that answer very simple... it gets asked about 4 times a week or more

    peace

lol, yeah. because of box rise the type R can easily handle 1200 watts.

infinite power with a bb replacement plan.....

but seriously, as long as you don't clip, and set a subsonic, you can just have at it

i was sending mine 1000 rms a piece, and they were movin, but showed no signs of failing

    1.21 Gigawatts

I feed my 800rms each(10's) and they're fine. 1kw to each 12" in a good ported enclosure should be plenty for daily.

If its in a ported box you don't want to be sending it full power underneath the port tuning frequency. You need to have the subsonic set good to not damage it.

Re: How much power is to much for a 12" Type-r??

Ok so yesterday i went to set my gains again. Turns out that the sub was already recieving 800wrms. After the initial install I kept turning the gain up little by little.

Im pretty sure it would take more but my viper only puts out 800w at 2 ohm. I should have bought the dual 2 ohm sub so i could have wired it to 1 ohm. Oh well live and learn.

    Thanks for the help guys.

Re: How much power is to much for a 12" Type-r??

I decided to measure what I am sending mine daily. On a Lil John song with a fairly low ,constant note, the most I recorded going to my Dual 4 was about 54 volts before distortion with my ear right next to the cone. Keep in mind this is in a 7.8ft box but if the coils measure 2.1ohms and rise is about .5 Id estimate they handle about 1150watts, and more if you build a smaller box. It was definatley moving quite a bit though.

smaller box has higher mechanical limits, but lower thermal limits
