    What's better 3 12's or 2 15's

    Given the same amount of watts...what would give more SPL?

    i would say 3 12's cuz u get more cone area, but it also depends on the subs... if u get 2 15" joe blow subs and put em again 3 12" joe blow subs with the same amp, the second joe blow setup will 99% of the time be louder.

    the cone area difference is very minimal.. look at the displacement ability of the drivers more then anything..

    well, more cone area doesn't allways mean louder, in this case with two 15's, would be louder cause they'd get more power where the 3 12's would have to divy up the power more. If you had more power, then it all depends on components, but once again, it's all in the box man.

    3x12= $450, Cone area of 36inches, Displacement .18 each, 1ohm load @ a 1800rms amp... 6 cubic feet sealed box...

    2x15=$400, Cone area of 30inches, Displacement .23 each, 1.5ohm load @ a 1800rms amp...6 cubic feet sealed box...

    By the way I'm looking into the audiobahn alums...

    THX again for all your help...

    no, the cone area for 3 12s is 1064.8368 square inches,

    And the cone area for 2 15s is 1109.205 square inches,

    pie, times radius , squared gets you the area of a circle..

    the 2 15s will alwase have more area than 3 12s

    actually phenoman you need to learn the difference between diameter and radius. because those numbers are way over... 3 12's would have a cone area of about 340 inches ^2, and 2 15's would have a cone area of 353 inches ^2.
    let me show you:

    a 15 really has a "radius" of ~7.5 inches..
    and a 12 has a radius of ~ 6 inches

    (pie)(6^2)*3subs=340
    (pie)(7.5^2)*2subs =353.4

    I know it was probably just a little mistake.. I just thought those numbers seemed way high.. I mean that would have been over 9 square feet of cone area of that was correct

    your right, I squared pie and radius together, should have only squared the radius.
    What can I say it has been a long time since school ,
