what should i do? 138 with 4 12s? thats horrible.....

hey, when i got my system istalled ( 4 12's ) i told them i wanted a 100% SPL box, they built a 3.6 cubic foot box for 2 12's then stuck the other 2 subs on top of them to make it isobaric, then i read that isobaric enclosures are for SQ and i lost 2 or 3 dbs per sub, so thats a 4-6 db loss because im not pushing nearly as much air as i should be with 4 12's. what should i do guys? take my car back and tell them i was reading up on isobaric stuff and found out im loosing a sh*tload of SPL and see if theyll change the box cause its not what i asked for and i didnt know any better? or just save up money and pay for a new box? with the 1 BP1200.1 IS it better to have it as an isobaric? because how i see it im not pushing NEARLY anywhere NEAR what i should be, im hitting about 138, 139ish with 4 polk DX 12's theyre 1 step down from MOMOs. any advice?

Essentially you are hitting 138 with the cone area of two drivers, which isn't half bad. Isobaric enclosures are predominantly for limited space installations. They do produce less distortion at lower volume levels, but IMO they sound no where near a sealed box. They may have done this for this reason - no room. You can try to complain to them, although I doubt it would do much good. If you want some high SPL numbers, port that bad boy.

    Mark,

Wondering if you could help me out on something since i seen you mention the "higher spl/port the box" statement. I'm running two Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1's, using a punch 800.2 to run them. I -know- this setup right here is not enough power for the perfects, but i hit a 138.7 in the last bass comp. My friend built the box for me, and he used 1 cubic foot for each chamber. Should i try to port this box, or, since it's exactly 1 cubic foot each chamber, would that bring my spl's down a notch? I'm hoping to be able to pick up either another punch 800.2, or sell this one off and possibly go for something a little more stronger for my subs. Any help on that would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks.

Now I'm not the professor of box building, but don't the kappas go in a .5 cube box? I'm guess that a ported box for the Kappa Perf 12s would be more like 1.5-2 cube box with port.

Well, it's a give and take relationship between vented enclosures, and sealed. With ported you sacrifice some sound quality, with sealed you sacrifice some low frequency extension. It depends on what you want - and if what you want is SPL, Perfects are not the sub for the job. True, they do get loud, as your 138 can attest to, but they are not meant for that application. Your Punch amp, Bridged and underrated at 800W is plenty to run those Perfects, trust me.

    Cliff,

Actually, i have the spec sheets that come with the Perfect 12.1, and it is recommended to use a 1cft sealed chamber for the "tight" bass, and it recommended to use a 1.75cft for a little more of the low frequencies. It just depends on what application you're going to use them for.

Ahhh I couldn't remember the specs my friend had a pair but his exloded his VCs literally shattered it was incredible with like 600RMS to each sub. That kinda made me not like them.

    Mark,

Much obliged for your response. I, indeed, am looking for a SPL sub that you could hear coming two blocks away. Always has been a dream of mine, and i thought that the Perfects would be a great start to that system. But as you say, they're not exactly built for SPL...what a shame. Anything i could do for them besides ditching them for new ones?

    Audio,

Thanks for the recomendations. Got a website for any of those i may browse? And it looks like you have a nice setup going for you, so maybe you could take a look at mine and sort of tell me if the mixture of it is any good or not? Thanks again.

Infinity perfects weren't necessarily meant for spl but i've seen numerous people on other chatboards claiming to be putting up numbers past 140 fairly often. I've seen as high as 149 i believe.. i think he had 4 though. I have 2 of them and will have 3 in a few days.. I havent measured them but i think they are close to 140 in my little escort. Its weird because certain notes they hit really hard and others not that hard, whereas my old subs i heard bass at different times, so the songs that hit before arent necessarily songs that hit now.
They can handle a lot of power but you have to be very careful with them and break them in good.. I am a bit mixed up on how all that stuff works but i blew out my first set and i had them in a 1 cf box. I put the new ones in a 1.3 cf box per chamber and they have yet to have any problems/distortion.. With the other box at high levels they popped really bad... btw the 1.75 cf dimension is for a ported enclosure not sealed.
If you really want spl get some kickers or brahmas or whatever else.. Personally i love the sound of the perfects for most songs. They have some lows that i'd never heard before with other subs. I've heard that the L7's are very inaccurate at reproducing bass.. But if you want loud they are the way to go. Thats why you hear about them in like 80 percent of posts on these things. Everybody and there mom has L 7's cus for the price you cant get more loud really.
Dont think however that you cant get much spl out of perfects though because with a little bit bigger enclosure (especially ported) with a nice amp you can do 140's which will definitely be heard a block or two away.

brahma 12 in 1.9 cf ported enclosure tuned to an ugly 38hz..

    REVO amp
    stock speakers in the front..

    looking to upgrade..
