new box/local shop problems and a few questions...

Ok guys...I have my system hookedup now and it hits pretty hard. Haven't got it metered yet but the guy in Sommer sound systems in panama city beach florida who competes in the IASCA said it should hit mid 140's as it is. I asked him while I was down there if he thought he could fit a ported box for the two L7 12's behind the seat of my truck. He said yea, it would be a tight fit but he could do it. I told him that all the shops here in the BAton rouge area of Louisiana said they couldn't do it. He told me that that just means they are too lazy and don't want to spend the time to do it. I plan to go around to all the shops here and find me someone who could do it for me. The guy in Panama said he could do it for about 200$. If I went with say a 3.5-4 ft^3 ported box would it increase my spl by a significant difference? I would like to hit upper 140's to low 150's. Rick(of sommer sound systems in PCB florida) said it would be possible if you had the right box. i wish I lived down there because sommer sounds was a spectacular audio shop, they let me go back and watch them put the amp in, the sat out in the parking lot and helped me tune the gain and everything just perfect. I love the service they gave there. Here at home most of the people say yea give me you money and I'll go do it my way, they don't seem to care what the customer wants. So guys will it be worth the 200 or so to get the ported box? I just want to put it in for competition and leave my sealed box there for daily driving. Let me know what you guys think. And if anyone can recommend an audio shop in my area that is friendly and will do what I want, let me know! Thanks.

all i can tell you is this..i just did a box for my friend at work who has 2 10's l7 and it went from mild crazy for 2 10's in a q logic box to down right are you kidding me type bass with a large ported...this is a very simple set up there are other things to do but for 3 hours worth a work cant beat it lol went up at least 6 db

so it would definitly be worth the money to get me a box built for competition? Also, with the two drivers should I divide the box and give each driver its on port or make it one large enclosure and have all the pressure going through one large port? I'm new to this and have never built a box but if no shop around here can do it for reasonable amount of money I'll jus thave to learn and do it on my own.

you could do it on your own, just get one of these Master Box builders to help you draw up a diagram for a vented box and get to work, the first one will prob look like crap, so plan to build two boxes.

look at my box..kicker says it should be seperate but if its the same channel it will work i dont care who says not as long as they are on the same plain ..the closer the better..the box i built slams like a mofo lol

where can I see a picture of your box? I also have a small problem that I'll have to build around on my box...the bed of my truck comes inside and protrudes about 2 inches from th eback wall of the cab kinda like this

so my back wall isn't perfectly flat, but if my guestimates are correct then I should have enough room for at least 5 cubic feet of space for the ported box.

This is a side view of the space I have for the box. Right now my box is only 14 inches tall and about 45 inches wide with a bd of 9in and a td of 7 inches. The sealed box stays under the protrusion on the back wall. My new box will have to go over this in order to get enough space. Look at this image and the next one I will post soon and let me know what you think. Also I can go about 10 inches wider per side on my box width.

I can get about 4 ft^3 and still stay under that protrusion but if I want 2 ported I'll have to go over it to get more space. Here is a idea I have for port placement and speaker placement on this box. Keep in mind I have no clue about ported enclosures and i think solo ported enclosures are usually slot ported so my idea of port placement may be way off from what it should be I just need ideas guys. Here is my idea for the front of the box.

would the top or the side be louder? What size port should it be? I want this box for pure SPL would it be better to divide the box down the center and have one port coming out of each side of the box or leave it as it is and have one big port on one side? with no divider? One more thing. The port should be closer to the bottom on the side or closer to the top of the side? Any ideas on how to build around that little protusion? Thanks alot man.

I think the only problem with the positioning of my port in that sketch is the port length, the box may not be deep enough at that height for the proper tuning. If I put the port on the side though wouldn't one sub have a little less air resistance than the other because the port being on its side? Do you have any pictures of the inside of a ported enclosure? Thanks again.

air resistance is due to volume of air nothing more...sealed no leaks
