3.5" dash speakers: Is good sound possible?

I am looking to upgrade the speakers in my oldsmobile cutlass. Unfortunately, all I can do with the dash speakers is replace them with different 3.5 inch speakers.

Now I realize I am not going to get much bass response out of speakers that size, but what are my options exactly?

I tried some Infinity Reference speakers and they sounded pretty decent but not quite good enough. There are also Infinity Kappa speakers which are more high end and might sound a bit better.

Does anyone have any better recommedations?

    Thanks.

Let's just say 3.5 inches are limited to about 200~400hz and up.... pretty much like you said, no midbass. You'll hear mostly guitars, mid end piano, and a lot of vocals, and that's about it.

Can you do 6 1/2's in kickpanels?

I think it would be way too difficult and expensive to do any custom work. I would probably need whole new panels. I'm not looking for an amazing system, just something that sounds reasonable. If I have to, I can get subs to compensate for the lack of bass.

But subs won't compensate for the midbass that you'll be missing (80hz - 200hz or 400hz). That's a range that subs 1) weren't designed to play, and 2) shouldn't play for localization reasons.

Any chance you could get 6.5's in your lower door? In most of the cars I've messed with, there are voids in the metal inner door in the lower front portion.....all you'd have to do is cut the door panel and make a baffle for the speakers to be mounted onto.

I dunno.....go around to your local shops or Best Buy/Circut City and ask to listen to only 3.5's (with nothing else playing) and see if they produce enough sound for your tastes.

my 1994 cavalier couldnt do it. and the headunit blew 3 pairs of 3.5s

dont even waste your money. get to fabricating a set of 6.5's or 5.25's in the door son. trust me. its a complete waste of time to try and make it work.

I put some kicks in my cutlass for the time being: http://www.cardomain.com/member_page...page_id=602382

They are pretty ****** but I have some glassing I did to my door panels for them that is gonna look really good. I would recommend putting them in the door, because where I have mine is a pain in the ***....

I think he is saying that his 3.5's will go as low as 65Hz. I swear every post he makes is proof positive that Darwin was full of it, because natural selection should have already selected him (I was raggin on you PP).

Been there, done that. Kappa's in the dash were too bright (tweeters hurt my ears). Best 3.5's by far are the Boston Acoustics FX3's that I'm running now. But like the other guys said, you need more than 3.5's for any decent front sound.

I put 5.25's in the doors of my Olds and amped them. The difference was unbelievable. Still have the 3.5's off HU power, but only to raise the sound stage up a bit. If you can fit 6.5's it'd be even better.

All im hearin is highs and lows nothing in the middle... its terrible... terrible i say!!

Re: 3.5" dash speakers: Is good sound possible?

first of all---there are 3.5's that sound great. i HAVE a 81 olds cutlass(bdiddy has a nice cutty as well) with 3.5" memphis coax's(15-PR35's) in the dash that sound great......but...as mentioned above--no bass. and if your cutty is like mine the only way to put more speaks in is with custom kicks or door panels. your first option is to throw some quality 3.5's in there then add some subs--then evaluate your sounds to see if you want some mids. then the question is where to put em. let me know if you need any advice.

Would kick panels sound that much better? That would put the speakers all the way on the floor. Would I need to keep some 3.5s running at the same time?

Not if the kickpanels are aimed properly
