    Good 6X9s for a 442

Me and my dad are restoring a 1972 olds 442 and I (naturally) am in charge of the sound system. My dad wants everything to appear "stock" and will not allow me to make custom fiberglass kicks for components... so basicly since I'm limited to a strictly rear stage of 2 6X9's.

What would you all suggest for the best SQ that I can get outta just two speakers?

don't worry, once I get the car there will be a front stage and some 10's in the trunk...
but for now he wants it to be nostalgic...

    Re: Good 6X9s for a 442

I would just get another pair of 6.5's and make brackets.

Mine: CDT, Eclipse, Diamond Audio, Dayton, Aura

Wifey: Infinity, Concept, Pioneer, Profile, JBL

    Refs: Ruckus, MSSOKC

another pair? and mount them where? I'm am not going to be allowed to do ANY cutting and there are only holes for the 6X9's...

Or are you saying 6.5s instead of the 6x9s?

    6.5's would be better.
you could fab up a bracket from 1/2" mdf.

yeah I know that, but he'll probably still want 6X9's cause that's how he used to do it back in the day

    Pioneer's highest line 3-way 6 x 9s sound good and they're cheap. I believe MB Quart makes a component 6 x 9 set but I've never heard it.

Infinity and JBL also make good 6x9's around $100-$200 range

Generally yes, but he has his reasons for wanting to go with the 6x9's.

    Diamond Audio M391l
    Focal 690CV
    Focal 690HC
    Infinity KAPPA693.5I
    Infinity KAPPA692.5I
    MTX 6933
    JL Audio VR690-CXi
    Orion C693
    Kicker K693
    MB Quart DTE-169

A few of the "better" sounding 6x9's I've listened to recently and took note of.

    Re: Good 6X9s for a 442

Ill have to agree on the Bostons cause I love my 3-way comps...

I would definately go with 6.5" midbass drivers in the rear instead of 6x9s.

Don't ruin the car with crappy audio.

    Re: Good 6X9s for a 442

My dad's the one that is insisting up 6X9's cause they're "old school" and after all it's his name on the title... until he dies, which hopefully will be a while, so I'm trying to give him what he wants without KILLING me

And thanks to all the referances thus far, it's much appreciated!
