Best value 6x9 and 4 inch speakers? bdget around $100 possibly higher
I want to get a better sounding audio system for my 96 Pontiac Bonneville. I have a Sony CDXGT350MP stereo unit which only has 17w rms output x4. Currently My car has 2 rear 6x9s 2 door 4inch speakers and 2 door 2 inch tweeters. Since the stereo only has 4 outputs the tweeters aren't even hooked up (I bought the car used so I didn't set it up like this that's how it was when I bought it). So what would you recommend to get the best sound for my money. Id like to spend around $100 but if the sound is significantly better for more I would consider it. Also is there a way I can hook up the tweeters even though the stereo only has 4 outputs? Any help is greatly appreciated. I was looking at these but I dont know much about car speakers.
JBL GTO938 6 x 9-Inch 3-Way Loudspeaker
JBL GTO428 4-Inch 2-Way Loudspeaker
Sony XS-GTX6932 6x9
I also could get an amp if I would get a large improvement from one or maybe get an amp in the future. If someone could recommend a good amp too that would be awesome.

Re: Best value 6x9 and 4 inch speakers? bdget around $100 possibly higher
I would cut bigger holes in door panels and place 5.25" at least. I had 4x6 in my doors (Sunfire '98) and cut holes and placed 6.5s. You mean 6x9s in rear windshield panel? I'm not a fan of speakers in rear panel facing windshield. Windshields reflect sound but also transmit some sound thru the glass so you're compromising fidelity and creating a complex acoustic effect. I nixed my rear Kappa 6x9s and placed ADS 6.5s in my rear door panels. Love it.
If you're going to go with 6x9s look at Infinity, Kicker, maybe JL Audio. And some of those coaxial titanium tweeters can be harsh so best to listen to them first.

here is a shopping list in your budget using Parts Express as the source. front speakers are 8 ohm which won't make much of an audible difference on a HU but will lower distortion and heat from the HU. important for speakers so close to you.
Parts Express has Aura speakers on sale. inexpensive and good value. best value 6x9 ($55/pr)
Aura 6900RPM 6" x 9" 2-way Coaxial Speaker Pair 269-185
up front, you can easily run the tweeters and dash on the same channels - that is what crossovers allow you to do.
cheap mids ($10 ea) - (3.5" so you can make a mount to create an airtight seal - that is vital)
Tang Band W3-881SI 3" Speaker 299-113
or
Vifa TC9FD-18-08 3-1/2" Full Range Paper Cone Woofer 264-1062
either with this crossover on them:
125uF is 175Hz HPF @ 8ohm 125uF 100V Non-Polarized Capacitor 027-362
tweeter ($10 ea)
Dayton Audio ND16FA-6 5/8" Neodymium Dome Tweeter 275-025
with this crossover on them:
4.7uF is 5600Hz HPF at 6 ohm 4.7uF 100V Non-Polarized Capacitor 027-332
or
Tang Band 13-1761S 1/2" Silk Dome Tweeter Pair 264-841
with this crossover on them:
2.2uF is 8kHz HPF at 8ohm: 2.2uF 100V Non-Polarized Capacitor 027-324
tweeters can mount in factory locations, but you may want to experiment a bit. the capacitors wire in-series with the positive wire. you may want to tape over the exposed capacitor leads to prevent a short (not a big deal to do). you can put them right at each speaker (similar to how coaxial speakers mount them)

otherwise, JBL or Boston Acoustics have acceptable coaxial speaker options.

Re: Best value 6x9 and 4 inch speakers? bdget around $100 possibly higher
Ya It looks like i should be able to fit 5.25" in the front door panel. What if I left the factory 6x9s in the rear replaced the front door speakers for $50-$100 with decent 5.25" and put an amp and sub-woofer in the trunk for $100-$200. Does that sound like a good idea since the 6x9 are pointing towards the window and not ideal. I could crank the volume on the 6x9s pretty low and just ues them for basic rear fill or even turn them off if needed. Can someone recommend decent speakers and woofer + enclosure +amp around this budget. Also would the 5.25" speakers benefit hugely from an amp or is it best to run them off the HU around my budget?
