Best way to improve sound from factory

Hi all, I am very knowledgeable in the home audio side of things...but not so much in the car audio anymore. I am looking to add some new speakers and am trying to find the best way to do it. I prefer to have my fade in the car about 60 front/40 back. This can be argued until the cows come home, but it is a reference so you can give me better advice. I drive:

2003 Grand Am GT w/monsoon sound system. I want a little more bass and some cleaners mids and highs. I think I can get the bass I am looking for withoit adding a sub.

Is it best to just add 6x9's to the back?
Should I just add 6x9's to the front?
Or, should I do 6x9's in the back, new tweeters in the door and also new 6.5" in the door? Essentially swapping it all out? I am not sure where my best bang for the buck would be if I were to only swap one thing out.

The local dealer sells Memphis, Kenwood and Hertz. Of these three what should I go with? Is there any brands online that are better than these. My budget is $200-$300 for everything...so it is not that high. Thanks for the help all.

Hertz for sure...Don't bother upgrading the speakers in the back, your main concern should be your front stage

Thanks for the reply. Is there anything else I should look at? I dont have to buy local. WHat about JL Audio or Focal? Would these be as good or better than Hertz.
If the answer is still Hertz. What series am I looking at in this price range? Should I put 6x9 and tweeter in the front door or 6.5" and tweeter in the front door?

You will be hard pressed to get anything Herz in your price range from a brick and mortar I think.

Install is as important as the speakers you are running. Get those doors sealed and deadened before you put speakers in them.

Amazon.com: Morel Maximo 6 1/2 inch 2 way component system: Car Electronics get good reviews for a budget set of components, but apparently really start to shine when amped. You could likely grab these and take care of your doors for the 300.00 you were going to spend on speakers. It's not hard, you can DIY.

Down the road, add an amp to bring out the best in the comps.

Most of us here like to go boom boom boom, but a sub that would blend nicely with your front stage is probably in your future! You can sound pretty good for not a lot of money, a lot of it is in the install and preperation!

6.5 components in the front doors would be a good start ,mat the doors to enhance the bas response too.then if you still want to replace the 6x9s in the rear deck then look for some 6x9 subs. cdt makes both but 300 will only be enough for the comps only.hertz or focal will keep you in the same situation ,only enough for the fronts.

I beat you! See what mylows10 has in the way of components for the front doors as well.
