I'm going to get a set of Alpine Coaxial's (6.5's) and they come with crossovers. What is it that these crossovers do. Lemme know, im a newbie at this stuff.

    2 Alpine SPX-177A 6 1/2" Speakers for the front

2 Alpine SPR-574A 5x7" Speakers for the back

Kicker KX600.1 Mono channel amp to power the Alpines in parralell with 300 watts each at 2 ohms

All in one sweet *** 1992 Ford Taurus GL, Yea you know the one that ugly teal, but hey my mom MADE me buy it.

    Re: What are Crossovers?

crossovers basically split the signal from the HU/amp into different frequencies, the high ones for the tweeter and the lower ones for the speaker, i think thats what they do, correct me if im wrong

    Re: What are Crossovers?

That is correct. They can also adjust tweeter sensitivity.

    Re: What are Crossovers?

can anyone comment on what makes a good one/more efficient/"better" one? For example, differences between slope?

well the more coils and capacitors there are in the crossover the higher the DB/Octave will be, but I don't know if that nescesarily makes it better.

    Re: What are Crossovers?

The steeper the slope the less strain on the drivers. Midrange can be crossed higher or tweeter can be crossed lower than on shallower slope. Overall you get a cleaner sound.
There's also an effect in phase shift in different slopes. For example, 6db/oct slope will have a 90 degrees shift, 12db/oct 180 shift. This phase shift will affect the absolute phase.
