    Yes and yes.

I would not buy the base version. The XL version is great. Side-by-side demos and in-car demos.

Yes, i had a demo this weekend and tried all 4 in the range. The difference i found between them was, unless your going to power them by anything over 125w rms the 165's sounded very good, the XL's sounded slightly tighter and the clarity was more noticeable too. But for nearly twice the cost!?

What the dealer said to me was the XL's produce +3db over the whole range and needed a bigger amp than he had it running off to really notice the difference

You need to really weigh up if the extra $ is worth it as im being swayed towards the 165's that sounded better than the opposite Focal's that i went to listen too!

    Hope this helps ;-)

Re: Hertz hsk 165 vs hsk 165 xl

for me, it was the tweeter improvement (very noticable) and the woofer was more neutral on the XL's. the base 165 woofer adds a noticeable amount of midrange distortion and the tweeter was not well balanced with the woofer. They seemed like a mix-n-match set of drivers to me. the woofers for each were radically different. but that was last year models.

I see the new 165's are more in-line with the old 165XL. so i guess the better question is if you are looking at the new or old 165's. you can still buy the old ones. if you're talking about the new models - then the base 165's may be just fine. I think bobster's review above is more useful.

Re: Hertz hsk 165 vs hsk 165 xl

Ok, well after some research and the reply from keep-hope-alive ive just ordered the XL's!! Just need to install them in my kick panels in an E36, can't wait! Without using any fibreglass and using MDF rings they should fit!

Does anyone know if leaving the stock baffle there is a good idea as this will in affect be totally sealed? And the best place for the tweeter? i read most are on the "A" pillar, but from my experience this leads to sound confusion/staging problems and its best to have it nearest the woofer as poss.

Re: Hertz hsk 165 vs hsk 165 xl

You need closed cell forum weatherstripping to seal the front of the speaker baffle to the door panel. Think about having the door panel being the front baffle and you need to seal that.

Mounting the tweeter at the woofer works in home audio. In a car the woofers are too low and to far offset, mounting the tweeter higher raises the soundstage and if properly implemented can increase stage width. If you mount the tweeters low with the woofers, everything will sound like it's in the doors.

Re: Hertz hsk 165 vs hsk 165 xl

Thanks for the reply. The speakers will be going into the footwells not the doors and theres a oem speaker baffle there, its like a matting material fully cupped behind the original 5/14". I could take it out and let th eXL's breath a bit more going into the pillars or leave it? I spent all day today working with MDF and am waiting for delivery tomorrow! So i need to make a decision as they are in a very awkward place to have to keep moving about.

Thank you for the advice on the tweeter placing, i knew i'd heard about that somewhere, home audio it was lol! I will place them ear height. Is it best to have the driver side pointing to the passenger side and the opposite for the other side?
