Component sound better. The tweeter and mid bass speaker are separated and mounted separately. The system also comes with a crossover usually which sends correct sounds to tweeter and correct sounds to midbass speaker.

Tweeter is much more balanced, midbass speakers are more prominent. Take a gander down to one of your local shops and listen to a couple pairs, then listen to some coaxials. You'll hear the difference.
