why dont i like the sound of comps?

it just seems weird to me how everyone likes the sound of comps with 75-200rms in the front stage and like 20-30rms (from deck) in the back, if you dont like the music coming from behind you just turn the fade forward a little? i havnt exactly heard a comp setup, but just with my fade forward as if i did have all my watts in my front speakers sounds weird. and what about the people listening in the back?

Sure, you can fade all the way forward, but it's still money that's better spent elsewhere.

and what about the people listening in the back?
Then make the front stage loud enough so it's clear from the back

haha, i would think buying 4 coaxs and a 4 chan would be cheaper than buying an expensive set of comps and a nice 2 chan...

Probably so, but you have to ask yourself...is getting a quality soundstage something that's important to you?

If it was all about price, we'd be running stock equipment...

Re: why dont i like the sound of comps?

The classic analogy..."Do you go to a concert and turn your back to the stage"

Thats why I don't have speakers behind me. And most component sets have the ability to more accurately reproduce sound, than many of the co-ax speakers built today, because the quality of parts and the design that goes into speaker.

Re: why dont i like the sound of comps?

Some people like sound coming from behind them. Personally, i dislike how it sounds for (a) directional reasons from front/back, and (b) stereo gets weird...diluted almost, with the rear speakers. and (c) time delay (rear speakers in my camry are way farther from my head than the fronts) -- the rear speakers just don't merge clearly with the fronts without significant time alignment which really ****s up the center image...
Movies should have portions of sound where it comes from behind you... dvd audio encoded in 5.1 should... standard music on CD's and mp3's shouldn't; it's not designed that way.

Re: why dont i like the sound of comps?

You're introducing two different concepts into this thread, sound and cost. So, I will touch on both of them.

Sounds is subjective yes, but most people will agree (after they have heard it done right) that a properly installed front stage sounds very good. I will not elaborate much further because it will start a huge argument. Suffice it to say music is recorded in left/right and a solid front stage consisting of left/right can replicate the original sound stage quite well.

Secondly, if you have a budget of say 400 bucks, why buy two sets of okay sounding coaxless for 200 and a mediocre 4 channel amp for 200? Especially, when you can get a set of 200 dollar comps (sound better then the coaxles) and a better 2 channel amp for the same price? Basically, you are getting fewer, better quality equipment for the same price. That's why most people don't recommend spending money on rear fill.

It is and it can sound fine. GF's car has a budget Profile amp and 4 Polk dB650 coax's and with a little fading to the front it sounds very good and is louder than fronts only.

Just because you run loud rear fill doesn't mean it has to sound like the sound is coming from behind you. Mine doesn't and I've got REV's in the rear getting 75 watts, just so happens that my front stage is louder.

A LOT of guys on here run SPL subs with lots of power, so do you think they're that concerned with a SQ front stage, imaging, TA, etc...? They just want/need something they can hear over their subs. A 4 channel and 4 coax's can do that for less $$$ than a good set of comps and amp.

you do get better imaging with just front comps and subs. And how often do you have people in the back. as long as it sounds good to the driver...thats the person spending the $ (usually)

Re: why dont i like the sound of comps?

I have experimented with the whole concept, and no matter what I have tried, I stll like rear fill. Don't get me wrong. the meat and potatoes is front stage, but to me I like complete and total sound comming from everywere. I only have 100 bucks in the rear for my 6x9 Alpine type S. That's very little money compared to what I have in my total system.

Re: why dont i like the sound of comps?

Im going to definately need a rear fill, but its only going to cost me about 10% of what is in my entire system, so its worth it to get the all around sound. Plus with the kicker 650.4 4 channel amp, have all the power I need
