2002 Mazda 626 - factory 4x6 -> 6.5?

Hey everyone,
Has anyone ever successfully put 6.5" rounds in the factory front door speaker locations in an '02 626?

I have a friend who is about to get 5.25" Audiobahn components installed via plastic size adapters and was wondering if 6.5's were possible without tons of altering or fab work. He likes a lot of midbass, so I figured going with a 6.5" component set would yield him more of what he wants.
