1 set if you want it simple and easy to install + tune.
2 if you are willing to take the time to properly tune each channel to your exact needs, play with crossovers, slopes, etc....

He is gonna put 1 set in the doors and the other in kick panels. (q-form) I didn't have much as far as reasoning but I did reccomend if he did it atleast get the same brand.

It will be in doors and in the kick. I not the worried about staging; more about hearing the words and mids clearly.
do a 3way setup, a 6.5 subwoofer in the door, midrange in the kick along with tweeter. PM me if interested in some CDT drivers.

3-way would be plenty loud
his subs aren't going to be all that loud in the grand scheme of things
however, i'd run a 5.25 or 6.5 inch set in kicks (whatever fits) and dedicated woofers in the doors off a different amplifier channel.
