i was just wondering exactly what an active set up was.

ok i searched and figured it out i think. but what would be a good crossover to use

You control the individual crossover points for each speaker in your car and you have to power each speaker individually

with a passive setup, a passive crossover controls the crossover points and power is sent to the crossover and split evenly among the drivers

so how exactly do i control / set these points?

and i was also wondering if it is worth it. would it be noticeable sound wise.

it is preferred to get an HU to already has an active crossover built in. that will give you the ability to control everything from your driver seat. also give this a read, http://www.caraudio.com/forum/showthread.php?t=146726.
