    Blew my CDT HD-62z :(

I was driving today on my way to the tire shop getting my tire fixed listening to music. i was listening to some 3 doors down song. anyways, out of nowhere it seemed my right speaker seemed to explode. I wandered WHAT THE HELL was going on and turned off my music. it seems my midrange is blown...or torn...or something. I have loved these speakers for over a year and it makes me sad that it would just die like that. i have always sent well under the wattage it can take. I have a cadence z8000 stereo amp (175x2 @4ohms) gain was turned to less than 3/4 and the speakers are 180w rms. Luckily, I have a 5 year warranty which is definately still in effect.

So, after all that ranting/whatever, can i expect any problems getting these replaced by CDT?

    Thanks,

they may say user error seeing as how 3/4 gain is most likely too much.

just curious how that can be? if the speakers are rated for 180w, the amp puts out 175 max, aprx 3/4 would be ~130. i have taken them considerably louder previously, but it is uncomfortable for listening so i keep it turned down. Thanks for the response tho

I dont believe the gain is a power control unit, if that was the case there would be nothign wrong with full gain all the time, I may be wrong though.

well, i am far from an expert in this category. i just assumed that the higher the gain, the louder the music, the more power being pushed to the speakers. If i'm incorrect, i suppose i'll just have to deal with it and take a look at those RE XXX components...they look pretty nice

read the gain setting sticky its all about matching the output of the headunit. and yes full gain is in one way more power but its not more cooling for the coils. clipped signals turn a normal curved sine wave into a square wave and increases the heat in the voice coils without any increased air flow so the burn up.

hmm, that's not good at all. I've always been careful and did my best to make sure the signal was not clipped at all, then today it was just bang and it sounded terrible. so is there any hope they will replace it under warranty? it really doesn't seem like user error because i was running this exact same setup for a long time with no problems

slowly making the coating on the wire used in the voice coil more brittle and weaker... or some part in the xover... and boom PS there is no way on earth that those comps will RLY take 180 watts longterm -- I have a hunch they would say user error unless its possibly a cap that went defective... but if it was a voice coil ... you are SOL unless they just don't notice...
