Ok I have a 7 year old 1000watt surround sound system wondering if this is okay to start building speakers for? Im sure any aftermarket speakers will be an improvment but I am not sure what kind of power my amp really puts out. hmm any suggestions also any other good home audio forums.

I like the parts express forum. Just click on the tech talk link on their site. Make sure you read the bible (first sticky on the forum) before posting. A lot of very smart people there, but very nice and laid back.

As far as if you can use your pioneer, yes. there are much better amps out there but it will work until you can get something better. When I upgraded from my old 100 watt per channel pioneer to a 35 watt per channel HK is was shocked by the improvement. When I heard good speakers- I couldn't stand to listen to my old ones anymore. DIY is a very good way to get a top of the line HT. Have fun.

Yes, I'm sure your 7 year old speakers are not nearly as good as you could build using now days technology. You don't need a lot of power in a house, just match impedance if your just starting out.

1. center channel
a. HiVi M4N 4" Aluminum/Magnesium Midbass 297-434
b. HiVi SD1.1-A 1" Textile Dome Tweeter 297-416
2. Sub
3. front towers
4. rear fill

I would like to use entry level speakers that are a common size so that the can be swapped out later. for the center channel I would like to spend about 100 or less. Thinking about using 2, 5" mid range speakers and one dome tweeter in the middle with a prefab crossover (I dont want to get in over my head).

You are already in over your head! LOL. Please don't use a prefab xo. I highly recommend going with a established design. Then you can use that as a reference point if you try to build your own. I built the Tritrix and highly recommend it: TriTrix MTM TL Speaker Kit Components Only Pair 300-700

This sounds better than my $1000 msrp Infinity RS-4.

The tritrix was designed to work as a center channel, Most MTM type speakers don't do well when laid down on their sides.
