    looking for nice headunit

ive been told that alpine provides the best audio quality, and eclipse does too. point is, i'm looking for a headunit for my car, and i want to have an aux input, as well as a cd player and a fm/am radio. i bought my car wiht my antenna clipped, so i'm hoping for a headunit that can still receive fm radio signals nonetheless. any suggestions? willing to pay around 300 or less.

there seem to be lots that will fit in your range. almost anything from pioneer, eclipse, alpine, clarion would be good. what type of features do you want?

i was looking into mainly apline's wma/mp3/cd players, but i didnt see fm/am radio as a specific. i dont really care about having a remote, and i'd like a nice display, preferrably blue-ish highlights. friend said i should pay attention to pre-outs; though i have no idea what he's talking about since my knowledge of headunits is limited. i wouldn't know about the fancy stuff available, but any recommendation regarding options and such is also appreciated.

preouts are rca outputs that send the music signal to your amps. a lot of people overrate preout voltage. when you set your gains you are matching the output voltage from the headunit with the amp. if you plan to add amps i would get something with atleast 2 preouts. something to look for in a headunit would be eq. the 2 common ones are graphic and parametric. graphic is pretty simple and probably easiest to use. you have a select number of eq bands and you can increase and decrease the level of certain frequencies. parametric allows you to do the same but also allows you to adjust the bandwidth/Q factor. time alignment allows you to delay the response from each speaker so that all the sound comes to you at once instead of being one-sided. i don't know if this more then what you wanted to know. crutchfield has some nice deals on last years alpines. a 9830 goes for $250 shipped.

**edit** forgot about crossovers. look for something that has some high pass filters for you front and rear speakers, and a nice low-pass filter/sub control.

Yeah I have an alpine and its nice, a lil old though. Try the 9835 or the 9833 both of those have the mp3 feature. Lil on the expensive side but nice display and features you want.

are you asking if alpine has am/fm radio? if so yes they do. ohms in simple terms is an impedence that presents itself to you audio output source. anyways that headunit is says 22 watts rms @ 4 ohms. that means if you get a 4 ohm speaker, that speaker will receive 22 watts. if it's a 2 ohm speaker that means the source will put out more power. the lower the impedence, generally the more power an amp will put out. headunits generally aren't stable at 2 ohms.

    Re: looking for nice headunit

there are no online dealer (besides ebay...) so CA classifieds is a good place to look CD 5423 $150:

and ebay has a mix of new (no warranty) and used:

Or you could look far a local dealer, but that will cost an arm and a leg.

    Re: looking for nice headunit

what would u recommend for rms power output and peak output? I don't wanna buy the cheapest headunit, which would still be close to 200, that sounds like crap.
