13 band graphic eg or 5 band parametric eq?

which is the better way to go?
i see that some decks have a 13 band graphic eq and some have a 5 band parametric eq.

well the more bands the more "tweeking you get to do to the sound played through the speakers"
    example:
    5 band = 60hrz,120hrz, 1.0khrz, 6.0khrz, 12.0khrz
    13 band = 60hrz,120hrz, 250hrz, 400hrz, 800hrz, 1.0khrz, 2.4khrz, 4.2khrz, 6.0khrz,8.3khrz, 12.0khrz, 15khrz, 19khrz.....

all could be adjusted +/- 6db or so.
so inturn you can adjust alot more with a 13band eq.(better SQ)

Re: 13 band graphic eg or 5 band parametric eq?

the difference is in the number of frequencies you can adjust, and how you can adjust them

a parametric lets you adjust the level of the frequency and the center frequency ie: 2dbs @ 50hz, they are usually pretty limited in frequency range

graphic has set frequencies you can adjust the level of, they usually have more frequencies to choose from too

a parametric would be better if bands are equal, but like it was said, more bands are usually better, and graphic almost always has more bands than parametric

Re: 13 band graphic eg or 5 band parametric eq?

just because the graphic has more bands that the parametric dosnt make it better. i had a 13 band graphic and now i have a 5 band parametric. IMO i dont feel there is much of a difference. if i had the choice between a 7 band graphic or a 5 band parametric, i would take the 5 band parametric any day of the week. but if you choosing a HU, i wouldnt choose based on the EQ. they are both good EQ. the graphic is a little easier to use at first, but if you use the parametric for a while, you will find that it is just as good.

Re: 13 band graphic eg or 5 band parametric eq?

Parametric, while it has less bands, allows you to target a specific problem frequency since the center frequencies are adjustable. With graphic, if you have a problem at 3000hz, but it only has bands for 2khz and 4khz....then you can't specifically target the problem frequency and have to play with the surrounding bands to get it to work.

So no, more bands aren't necessarily better.....since the bands could be located at frequencies that you don't need adjusted, and it doesn't have bands at frequencies that you do need adjusted.

Re: 13 band graphic eg or 5 band parametric eq?

i currently have an older model pioneer deh-p940mp that has never been out of it's box. i wrecked my car shortly after buying it and it has just been sitting. i was thinking about selling it to get either the alpine cda-9835 or the cda-9855, but can't decide to sell it or keep it.
the alpine's offer a 5 band parametric while the pioneer offers a 13 band graphic eq.
i paid $750 for the pioneer and i don't even know what it is capable of. i was told by the guy at ultimate electronics that it was a sick *** deck at the time, but you know that he is trying to make a sell. i have had alpine's in the past and they are great decks.
they still sell my pioneer at ultimate electronics and it is still around $700, so i mean it must be a good deck. the alpine's and the newer pioneers are listed at about $550.

the 940 is still a great deck imo, 750 is a little pricey for it, but from an authorized dealer it's not as bad, but you can grab one on ebay for under 300

i had the 9300 and it is almost exactly the same. now i have the new alpine and im still not sure which one i like better. they are both extremely tight HU's. if i was you, i would probably keep what you have unless you want to hook up an ipod or sirius radio.
