Extremely poor radio reception in a Pioneer DEH-6400BT

I replaced my stock Delphi cassette/radio in my '96 Saturn with a new Pioneer DEH-6400BT. I retained the stock antenna but had to use a 90 degree antenna adapter with this deck. The radio reception is extremely poor in this deck. I have a solid antenna connection. There is absolutely no comparison with the reception that I am getting now compared to the stock radio or to that of the 10 year old Blaupunkt deck in my other vehicle. Is Pioneer making that poor of tuners now or did I just get a defective lemon?

turn local on (settings once on tuner) and BSM, seems to make a huge difference
