Looking for a single din non-flip nav unit

I have been looking for a single din non-flip-up nav unit, like a Parrot Asteroid Classic which would have been great but for all the negative reviews I have read (constant crashing, rebooting, failures, even clumsy track navigation, etc.) to put into a Jeep Liberty with its uncommon oval dash opening. Is there anything, unlike the Parrot, that will actually work? I don't want to butcher the dash to get a double din in, and I HATE flip-ups. I would have loved the Parrot but I refuse to buy junk that fails to perform. Surely there must be something out there?

Have you ever looked at a different way to add navigation? Rydeen makes a really good replacement rear view mirror that has navigation built in with a dedicated screen. You can tie it into the radio to get the voice prompts through your speakers, or it has its own speakers built in.

Yeah, I've looked at the "smart mirrors" by Escort, Boyo, MIT, Pitbull, and cheap HFK etc., but after seeing the Parrot (which apparently leaves much to be desired) or the JVC KD-NX5000 (apparently no longer available), both of which are built-in to the single din package why not replace the awkward POS factory junk with a nice aftermarket CLEAN all in one package! But the JVC is no longer available! Or it it? That is my question. And what about the

I already have a 4.3" separate Nav (TomTom) with voice commands that works fine so I don't need a mirror. But I am looking for an upgrade to the boring factory radio so why get the nav built in right? Thanks for the suggestion though.

If you have a good shop around you they can cut the dash to put a double din in. If they're good at it, it'll look factory.

Re: Looking for a single din non-flip nav unit

Yeah, I actually did do that myself on my Dodge Dakota. It has the same dash opening as the Jeep. Might have had the same radio too but it was missing when I bought the truck. Anyway I put a 7" double din unit in, had to cut the dashboard and the trim panel. It came out OK, but this is the wife's vehicle and she won't go for it. So I need to find a single din and rig some kind of trim to cover the gap (Chrysler's stupid oval radio cutout - it is like 1.5 din).

What does your wife want for navigation?

Single DIN dash kits are readily available for the Liberty. www.metraonline.com/vfg

Re: Looking for a single din non-flip nav unit

She already has a portable Nav system, but I want to replace the POS factory head unit (IMO ALL factory head units are POS). I have replaced the head unit in every vehicle I have ever owned (about 50). So why not get one that has Nav too? Less clutter on the windshield, etc. A 'standard' system, with directions and voice (en espanol - she is Colombian) is all we need built into a nice hi-fi head unit that has multimedia hookups (USB, etc.) that will fit in a single din. She won't let me (or anyone) cut the dash.
