werent they made the same year? or relatively the same time? i gotta assume they probably have the same motors.

Actually, 2004 was the last year alpine made great HU's.
2005 is when they went downhill, no more v-drive internals, etc. Then 2006 is the ****** year... ever since. As far as mainstream HU's...

from what i gathered from alpine, the 9855/9853/9851 motorized face issues were from the earlier part of 2005. supposedly they corrected the problem at some time which i would tend to believe. i had a 9853 that went out on me after about 3 months of using it. because it was still under factory warranty, i of course got a brand new one. i got a 9855 in late 2005 and i've had absolutely no problems with it. it was used heavily in my caprice until i began storing the car. i recently upgraded the hu in the car and put the 9855 into my truck so now it's getting a lot of use again. no problems. i guess if you have an early 9855, you may be having problems with it. as far as dates go, i'm not 100% sure on the month when they changed. alpine definitely went downhill after 2004, however, they still had lots of options in 2005. just like one of you said, 2006 was pretty much crap for the main stream stuff. 2007 brought about the 9887, which is still their top of the line model.
