How is the Pioneer DEH-1100MP for a 16 yr old's first car?

As posted yesterday, the kiddo just got his first car and of course wants to fix it up. He'll do speakers and eventually probably sub/amps too, but to start, of course, needs A HU. How is this Pio? It is $80 at Newegg right now, so a pretty good deal, and it looks like it has Ipod interface/controls from what I can tell...

my first car did not have a HU at all not even a stock one the guy i bought it from, took it out after we looked at the car.

if he wants to add speakers/subs/amps later, make sure to get a headunit with a nice set of preout's (at least a subwoofer preout)

shoot,my fist radio was a pioneer cassette deck with locking fast forward only!!

just make sure it has some pre-amp outputs so he can add the amps and subs later.

you might find alot better radio in the classifieds here for that price too.

If you step up and spend a little more money youll have a unit that will last you much longer and just be better in general


The pioneer P4000ub is a **** nice budget radio...i owned one before. 4v sub outs, USB input, front aux input, decent display, parametric EQ, etc. Theyre going for 120 shipped on ebay right now, with free dash kit and wiring harness for your car.

To me, the HU is the most important part. Of all of my components, this one I touch the most. There are some better Pio units out there, but it all depends on your budget.

I don't like the DEH-1100MP because it only has 1 set of preouts.

2008 3000 series for $20 more. MUCH better deal.

If he can kick out another $25 go for the 4000UB.

USB, AUX, 3 sets of 4V preouts, SIRIUS, XM ready, etc. I have the premier edition (400UB) and while it doesn't have the top notch displays, it has all the core components you'll need to put together a quality system. Don't skimp on the head unit, it's the core of your system.
