would recommend turning sw settin on head units all the way up before tuning amp?
in doing that would i bypass another artificial amplification or add artificial amplification (creating more distortion)

When subwoofer volume is at its max, the subwoofer is getting the max voltage possible and making maximum output. When it's not, the sub isn't. I tune with it at max and then cut it depending on the music. In my opinion it's better to leave yourself enough head room that you can run it at max volume with the head unit cranked and then cut the volume if necessary than to tune it at a lower volume but not be able to turn it up if you want more sub.
