Headunit Combo

Good day sir's, can anyone suggest a good headunit for video and audio use.

I noticed that some of the 2-Din mobile media receivers does not have all of the audio system function & tweaking options which can be found in 1-din cd receivers.

Is it advisable to use a separate 2-Din HU/Monitor for video playback and 1-din HU for audio purpose?


ive read from a couple of post that alpines cda 9887 seems to be ok, which monitor to go with it?


kindly advise preferrable brands/models of units

As far as I have seen for the best audio playbock while also using a double din would be an Alpine W205 along with an H701 processor. However if video play back trumps your audio playback I would look into something a little different, most likely along the lines of a 9887 and a seperate monitor as you said. Not exactly sure on the best picture for a double din hole but you can check out the lilput and xenerac touch screens, or maybe look for non touch screen LCD panels in about 6"-7" size.

Can find some of these monitors over on www.mp3car.com and they have forum sections dedicated to monitors as well.

vey polite you could also try the pioneer touch screens as they have the lcd feture which is good and pretty good sound i think avics are the models but dont quote me

Ive been battling this challange for ever as well, I enjoy the double din touch screen as they are easy to control but most lack (built in) audio processing, preamp volts, and eqs.

My w200 by its self is horrible.

Pioneers screens just bother me to be honest. more flashy then functional.

I heard the 205+701 is amazing. But thats 900+500 new, used is less but its hard to find 701s... If you come across the combo for sale I would try it.

What I did was bought a w200, sold it went to a CD7000 eclipse single din, sounded 100X better. I then decided Ill stay with eclipse but I want a double din screen. I looked into the AVN 5510. Its what I have in my car now. It has a minimal crossover. Where i select the cross over point and slop for the 4 speakers and Subwoofer. Which works but I was used to the 3 way crossover of the CD7000 so the AVN was not as nice.

The avn 5510 also has 7band peq for tweaking. But the best feature is the avn has 5v preouts... 90% of the double dins/screens out there do not have more then 2v which just makes a huge difference.

I would buy used for now, that would be my biggest ADVICE, until you find what you like then when the used one dies, get the newest model of the one you liked.

Also what a lot of people do is, get the head unit they like and have the most comfortable feel with, like 205 or AVN or any other screen, and just put a Dolby Digital processor on it, from a different company. This method works the best I heard but just costs more. And you have a head unit(if single din you have a bran too) and then you have a processor and its just more work.


The whole problem with this issue that comes up a lot with me is due to the fact your trying to cross to markets.

SQ/FUNCTION vs LOOKS and BLING....

Its an age old thing of form vs function.



I like the new screen but at the same time I miss my single din headunit...

Its a hard toss up.

yup, i share the same sentiment. actually what i have right now is a kenwood DDX7039 and a pioneer 8850. what prompted me to get a separate 1-din cd receiver was as what you have said lack of function for the 2-din unit, but it does have a very good screen. and now im contemplating on ditching 8850 and get an alpine 9887 & 205 instead or just get the 9887 and retain DDX7039. but as i checked both their specs (9887 & 205), they are almost identical aside from the specific functions dedicated to each unit <ie, video playback on 205 and an in depth audio options on 9887>. And it made me wonder if there are any headunit combinations or 2-din unit which may cater to both audio<SQ> and video.

and yes you're right, most 2-din units have a 2v preout only. reason i need a screen is for my kid.


It seems that the most logical combo is a 205 and a 701 as others have mentioned as well. anyway, maybe ill try 9887 first and forego changing the 2-din for now, and if i still got the itch., id look into the 205/701 combo.

I'm still pondering though. Decisions, decisions.

Honestly I have NO desire or intentions of going multi-channel audio in this vehicle. Stereo would MORE than adequate in a 4 door car. My biggest thing is to keep the SQ of the P9 combo while venturing out into video.
