Kenwood Kdc-x891 vs Kdc-x990

Out of the two which would be a better head unit? I like the look of the 891 a lil more aswell as the USB is a plus. However the 990 has 4 Eq bands over the 891's 3 bands (does this make a big difference?) and also the screen on the 990 i think is better. I know the 891 dosn't have T/A but does the 990 have it? Does the XXV-01D have T/A?

The 990 would sound better(slightly) and the display has more colors, but the usb on the 891 is awesome and it sounds great also.

Yes, the KDC-X990 has time alignment.
Yes, the XXV-01D has it as well.


The difference in the screens between the X891 and the X990 is actually pretty significant.
The 891 has the 64-color flourescent display whereas the X990 has the same 4,096-color OEL display that the XXV-01D featured.
The flourescent display, to me, appears a bit grainy - somewhat like asking a computer monitor to display something optimized for a higher resolution than the monitor is capable of.

yeah, ny 791 has the same display, it's not great. I've seen an xxv-01d and it's gorgeous.

It was certainly an upgrade from a KDC-X679, that's for sure...


I'm actually looking seriously at the X991 as the T/A is better than on previous eXcelon models but it drops from a 4-band PEQ to a 3-band (not sure why?) and I don't know how significantly that would affect things for me, if at all.

If I buy a KDC-X991 (and that's still not concretely decided upon as of yet) then my XXV will go back in its box and get put away as it is an Anniversary-edition unit and was limited to a smaller production run than the rest of their HUs from '05.
